Yeah, I can be this way, though I'm also the opposite way where I hesitate to recommend something to people because it's old/fiddly/etc. and I don't want them to hate something I like.

I feel the same way. I really want to rec my favorite but I'm so afraid that no one but me actually likes it and so now I'm really hesitant to suggest it to anyone or to even talk about it.

I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours!

CrossGen

I read some articles that praise it but then I also hit this wall of "it's so 90s" and stuff like that. When I do bring it up to someone who used to read it, they're always "wow, I haven't thought of that in years" so I wonder if it isn't actually fairly forgettable. I feel like the only person who still wholly loves this series, and feel self-conscious, like I should've outgrown it years ago.

What's yours?

Wait a minute, are you the person from this thread

I've not read Crossgen myself, but there's some big names on it apparently. And yes, it's very 90s, but that's not necessarily a bad thing!

In my case, it's Marathon. One of the few exclusive claims to fame for the Mac in the 1990s, on its surface it's just another Doom clone (complete with somewhat abstract level design) but even 10 minutes of play reveals hints of a startling philosophical and literary depth that only gets deeper into the second and third games.

The problem is, it's an old FPS -- and it uses save points, rather than quick-saving (though you can certainly mod quicksaving in!) As such it's rather fiddly and difficult, especially as Aleph One (the source port for playing it on modern systems of any OS) has a couple quality of life issues. So I'm very hesitant to recommend it to people. At least it's legally free.

Yeah, that was me. I just don't know enough about comics as a whole to know how other comic fans would view CrossGen or what their expectations are so I can appropriately manage them. I'm not even sure if the art's up to par.

I just quickly read the wiki on your game, and it does sound very interesting! I haven't played a ton of games but the ones I have played, the stories and the characters are always my favorite parts. And worldbuilding. I love great worldbuilding! (Sadly, I am completely technologically challenged. I don't think I've had one game ever that didn't freeze/crash my computer or just not work. But I do love older games.)

Marathon was my shit! Goddamn, I dumped so many hours into those games. My brother and I used to design elaborate maps and then make each other run through them.

And the awesome story. And those badass theme songs.

First time I ever joined a LAN party, too. Man, so much nostalgia right now.

If you feel like playing it again, here you go!

I completely know what I mean.

It's actually, like, distinct stages in my life. I used to recommend everything to everyone. Now I don't recommend hardly anything because it's just so hard to try to understand what people actually want, you know?
