It seems like it's increasingly common for people to see backlash against their fave's popularity, and mistake it for evidence that their fave is not only unpopular, but hated.

backlash against a character DOES mean that people hate them though

Everything ever created has haters. It doesn't automatically make something hated. The backlash against fandoms like Homestuck and, more recently, Steven Universe has been enormous, but they're still massively, undeniably popular. No one in their right mind would describe liking Steven Universe to be an unpopular opinion. Tony having haters doesn't negate the enormity of his popularity.

Backlash only happens because the character was overwhelmingly popular in the first place, so if you still like them you're probably in good company. Just stay with your fellow fans and don't wander into anti-spaces.

Backlash can be obnoxious because in fandom now it's never that. You just get called an oppressive abuse apologist or something.
