Am I a bad person for laughing at this?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If you are, then so am I considering how amused I was making it!

I thought myself terribly clever for the image placement in particular!

Dangit, OP. I'm never gonna get that connection out of my head.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
>:D

I heard about Spielberg LOVING the film and then I thought about the shots of Lawrence of Arabia that George Lucas referenced (prominently in Attack of the Clones) and then I realized that Lawrence was a HUGE influence on Indy.

Lawrence: Oxford scholar, archeologist, desert explorer, military leader, promoted to Colonel, had interesting experiences with whips (he was a masochist)

Indy: archeologist, professor, desert explorer, trademark whip, Colonel

Heck, Indy even meets TE Lawrence canonically.

There's coincidence, and then there's that. Although now that I think about it, the idea of a young H. Ford wielding a whip because he's a closet masochist is a nice idea. Yeah, I like that idea.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Really don't think that the connection is that strong. Lawrence is probably a model but one of a huge number of models for the general concept of 'adventurer', not a 1-to-1.

Good line about the whip though.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not a perfect 1 to 1 but it stuck out to me, I suppose, considering how fond both Spielberg and Lucas seem to be of the film Lawrence of Arabia.

Particularly Spielberg's early work which is WIDE-SHOTS AHOY.

I giggled like a maniac making this secret though. (Which just goes to show how lowbrow my sense of humor is, I suppose).

Yeah, again, I'm not even disagreeing, it's just that the Indy series has to be one of the most influenced things ever. There's just this insane wealth of touch-points in genre and look and feel and character and cinematography and everything. Which is one of the things that makes it great, that it has those influences without just being a pastiche of them.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Lucas especially tends to make his films giant references to EVERYTHING HE LOVED AS A KID.

It's quite fun to try to peel apart all the different influences.

I'm more familiar with Star Wars but Indy's just as influenced.

The whip thing is what got to me in this case, I'll admit.

Okay, I've giggled about the whip thing.

This is pretty interesting OP to read about Lawrence being an inspiration for Indy. I've always thought it was Allan Quatermain from "King Solomon's Mines", though that could also be another posibility as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there's multiple influences. The connection to Lawrence just amused me. I'm not as familiar with Allan Quatermain, though. But Wikipedia says he was also an influence on Indy so I'm guessing you're right!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Indy was based on real life adventurer/archaeologist/paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews?

I see it, if only as a fantastical version who doesn't actually do the boring parts of archeology.

There's an episode of Young Indiana Jones about him hanging out with young T.E. It's really goofy and terrible, but hey. Here's a clip.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sick of these secrets. Lawrence of Arabia will never interest me and seeing this again and again is just annoying and boring.

We get it anon, you love that story. Give it a rest.

People who don't like TE are boring, though. Think of all of us who detest anime and gaming.

No. I just have taste and and can keep up with the times.

Sorry sweets, but the comm doesn't revolve around you.

:D

I dressed up as Indiana Jones for Halloween once, though I had to use a riding crop instead of a whip because I couldn't find one.
