Is the writer trolling or what?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What makes you think that a fanfic writer might be trolling their readers? My usual suspects are the ones that suddenly spring out surprise pairings (the story starts out as A/B, but ends up as A/C, or it's tagged as A/B, but two chapters in it has been nothing but A/C, A/D, B/X).

I think that a fanfic writer might be trolling if they're seriousfic, because they're seriousfic

(seriousfic is the best)

what is seriousfic? I take it it doesn't actually mean "fic that is serious" in this case?

I would hardly consider changing a pairing as trolling, maybe the author just changed their minds? Unless it's a one-shot and they label it a certain pairing but do a different one... but I'd think if the fic "feels" genuine, it probably is because no one wants the flames of scorned readers.

If the fic is very ridiculous, graphic and shameless, and not much effort has been put into it, and is obviously meant to be stupid or shocking, then I might consider someone as trolling.

I know one fic (50 chapters or so) where the author changed the pairing in the last chapter, replacing the main pairing with the competing OTP of the fandom. Trolling or not, that's a bit late in the game to change pairings without warning.

I get that might not be what the readers want to see, but I think in the end you write for you, and you write what feels right for the story. In any non-fic story, a pairing change could happen last minute. I know people read fic to get specific elements, usually pairing, but honestly an author doesn't really owe readers anything. It if feels right for the story, then that's that. Yeah, you might make some readers mad, but oh well, there's worse things in life than having a fic take a turn you didn't want it to.

It's still pretty douchey to mislead people, though.

NA Yep, I think so. "I can do what I like!" yeah sure but give people a heads up.
