As someone who is guilty of having been a shitty, shitty mod long ago, yes, I think they ought to be on reasonably good behavior most of the time. Calling anyone stupid for either being lazy or just not knowing where to start is completely unnecessary and unprofessional, and there is no reason for this to ever happen. If you're having a bad day, step away from the computer until the urge to be a complete asshole subsides to a point where you can be civil. Being a horrible person in a position of power reflects badly on you, and can poison the community as well. And being the one who contributes content or other essential things does not entitle you a few potshots at anyone.

(But to be honest, if nasty!user has been warned several times about being nasty, and continues to be nasty, I probably wouldn't blink if a mod fired back before banning. Not saying it's nice or right, I'm just saying I wouldn't blink at it.)
