this isn't about fs or case, first off. general question.

do you think mods of a community or game have an obligation to be polite or professional? if they do their job in making sure the community or players follow the rules but are snarky assholes about it, like calling someone a stupid n00b for not reading the wiki page for the game, do you care? or should they be held to a higher standard?

They don't have an obligation, but it's usually in the community's best interest if they're as bland and professional as possible.

I think that mods should be, if not consistently polite, at least reasonable and not spiteful or openly hostile without cause.

but for example does "didn't read the FAQ and asked a question" qualify as cause or reasonable to you? reasonable doesn't say anything about where you'd draw the line

No.

You might be thinking a user is dumber than a box of rocks. But if you're a mod, you say something along the lines of "please read the FAQ before asking questions, the answer to your question is there." You don't shit on someone for making a single mistake.

Absolutely. Part of why I quit TTLG was because of how amateur unprofessional bullshit the mods had gotten.

Well, no one should be an arsehole online but a little snark and selfexpression - sure. Everyone's is entitled to it, mods included.

As someone who is guilty of having been a shitty, shitty mod long ago, yes, I think they ought to be on reasonably good behavior most of the time. Calling anyone stupid for either being lazy or just not knowing where to start is completely unnecessary and unprofessional, and there is no reason for this to ever happen. If you're having a bad day, step away from the computer until the urge to be a complete asshole subsides to a point where you can be civil. Being a horrible person in a position of power reflects badly on you, and can poison the community as well. And being the one who contributes content or other essential things does not entitle you a few potshots at anyone.

(But to be honest, if nasty!user has been warned several times about being nasty, and continues to be nasty, I probably wouldn't blink if a mod fired back before banning. Not saying it's nice or right, I'm just saying I wouldn't blink at it.)

Yes, and not just because I think everyone should make an effort to be polite. But if they get into an argument with someone, no matter how stupid or rude that person is being, the mod will always look bad and get flak if they lose their temper. Even if the other person is being a grade-A asshole, it will reflect badly on the mod in question to some degree. That's what I've seen happen, in my experience.

That said, if being a little snarky is part of their personality and they're like that with everyone, I doubt that something like "read the rules, n00b!" would be an issue.

Having left communities because of mods being horrible, I'd say yes, mods do have an obligation to be polite and professional.

After spending some time lurking around the DA Confessions blog on Tumblr, I think the conduct of the mods there should be an example to all. They're not rude, just firm when something comes up that requires a response. I don't think they're inclined to calling someone a "stupid n00b" and are not adverse to repeating their standards of not allowing obvious trolling and hateful confessions through.

Overall, yes, I do think a good mod by definition is polite and professional. Any mod who is a snarky asshole to new people is a bad mod. Yeah, n00bs make dumb mistakes, but you learn a lot better by saying "Hey, I suggest you check out the game's wiki first, they have a lot of great stuff on there!" than by going "Read the wiki and fuck off".
