Images: At left, Vic Fontaine, wearing a tuxedo and singing into a microphone. At right, the EMH, looking vaguely dissatisfied.

Text;

Not secret: I loved both of these characters and what they brought to their respective shows.

Secret: I wound up hoping that, for the sake of the plot/to show there aren't always happy endings, that both of them would wind up being deleted or having their memories wiped.

And yet for all that, I can't bring myself to write fanfic about the concept. I'd feel too guilty.

I'm just a bundle of contradictions, I guess.

That's really weird to me because I don't think it's necessary.

Especially in the case of DS9. Pretty much the entire 7 seasons of DS9 already exist to demonstrate that there aren't always happy endings. It seems really unnecessary to also have Vic get wiped. I mean, hell, that's literally the theme of one of the big Vic episodes as it is.

I'm also just not sure why you're focusing on the AI characters specifically as the means to demonstrate that there's not always a happy ending. I don't know. This secret is just weird to me.

Yeah...of all the series to apply this idea to, these two?

I think the reason I focused on the holograms was because the idea of "loss without death" appealed to me from a story perspective.

In DS9, I had no idea how it was all going to turn out, but since it's generally the minor characters who die first in these situations, I thought it would be powerful if, during an attack on the station, the equipment that ran the holosuites was badly damaged, so that once it came back online, Vic was still around, but had lost his self-awareness of being a hologram. It would have affected pretty much all the major characters, and been an interesting take on the "casualties of war" idea.

As for Voyager, I was assuming that the whole show would have a happy ending, with everyone getting home and reuniting with their loved ones, and I thought the idea of the EMH being studied and "factory reset" would add a bittersweet note to proceedings (this was before we learned about the Mark 2 EMH's, and WAY before the "photonic rights" storylines kicked in; after that, it was obvious that they would be going for a pure happy ending).

I can see why you think it was weird and unnecessary, but I guess it just appealed to my morbid streak.

That's really sad.

But I always wanted to write an angsty fic based on the ep where a nightmare suffering Nog lives in Holosuites. Vic mentions it's the first time he's continuously been on and I thought it would be interesting to explore his character's thoughts and limitations in light of what we know of other holograms like the Doctor.

Eugh. Vic Fontaine drove me nuts. I only skipped one DS9 ep, and that was the time he got Kira and Odo together. Thankfully, they kept him in small enough doses after that the eps were watchable.

I don't blame that on Vic Fontaine, though, I blame that on Kira and Odo's love story being real bad

DA

If they were going to go for a trainwreck, they should have hooked him up with Troi's mother permanently. At least that would have been an entertaining trainwreck.

...now I must go bleach my brain because it's remembering the one and only ughtastic Odo sex scene there was in Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Y U DO DIS BRAIN?

I loved Kira/Odo once they got together but god it was painful until they did. And Vic Fontaine was awful too.

Wow, it's weird that I see Robert Picardo as "Woolsey" now.

I'll always seem him as the Admiral from "Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus".

You are good people anon. Also reminds me I need to show that.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
And, "Mega Shark versus Mecha Shark" too.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
He's always been the handsome doctor from China Beach.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Uh the Doc already got his mind wiped once, he doesn't need that fate again.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-08-01 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
The last season of DS9, where a guest hologram is a better counselor than the counselor.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-08-01 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
But at least he's less annoying than the multiple episodes of Kai Wynne and Gul Dukat engaged in evil villain pillow talk.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
OH GOD THE SQUICK

But I was so happy when she finally got her ticket punched, even if it was Dukat's doing. She's been such a dogmatic pain in the ass for Sisko all seven seasons.

No, not the holograms!

I actually like the doctor, but I totally see him as Woosley, too.
