I keep forgetting that I have this on my computer to watch. XD Thanks for reminding me, OP.

...so the name of this anime is a reference to The Prisoner, yes?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
translating his name was the stupidest localization decision

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
What, Rat's? Pretty sure his name is literally supposed to be "Rat", people are calling him "Rat". In this case, imo, translating his name was the only correct way to go about it, leaving it as "Nezumi" would make it sound like it was actually his name.

da

The word is also used for "mouse," so it could have been one or the other, but either one probably would have been translated. People probably just assume it's like Mixx with Usagi back in the day instead of a series quirk. The other series I always think of with a similar issue is Princess Tutu with Ahiru.

Nezumi IS his name. It's his name, it's what people call him. It's even differentiated from an animal's name by a different writing system. Stop calling him 'Rat'.

The concept of "rat" is his name. What are you talking about in reference to the writing system? How does his name being written in katakana make it mean "Rat" any less? And lol sorry, his name is Rat, it's supposed to be the idea of Rat, and his name is Rat in the English version - maybe you more appropriately ought to stop calling him Nezumi?

Why they didn't use "Nezumi" and went for "Rat" instead in the English translation (which was the correct course of action on their part).

weeaboo pls

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's how I know a fan came into the series through the localized manga. Easy to dismiss them that way.

Ahahahaha I am so amused that you're trying to bring sub snob wank into f!s, 10/10, would chuckle again, well done.

I had that kind of discussion once for another character ("Master" in the original, but I translated it to [Restaurant owner in my language], because the connotations to "Master" are too different in my language) but I was "just" the translator, and overruled by the editors. It's never easy with talking names, least of all when they express stuff like the person's job or societal standing...

Translation is an interesting thing. I maintain that most of the time, languages are equipped to accommodate the same nuances of expression, even if a translation isn't "exact". But sometimes there are words or phrases, especially titles or honorifics, that just don't translate very well because the direct translation has a different image or usage, or doesn't exist at all. I'm usually of the mindset that the intent of the writing is more important than word-for-word translation, but I know in things like anime dubs, that can make some fans mad when they feel like there's too much of a change from original dialogue.

I don't know what that is, but that's really cute!
