Addiction storylines done well

Can anyone give me a list of recs for these kinds of stories in media?

Recs for fanfics that handle this well are a-okay too.

The addiction can be to anything - alcohol, drugs, gambling, some sci-fi or fantasy idea, etc.

Requiem for a Dream?

idk I've never been addicted to any sort of drug, so I can't attest to its accuracy but... that movie is also the reason I've never been addicted to any sort of drug. lol

Batman: Venom. It's a bit, er, 90s, but serves as an interesting background piece to the Knightfall arc. Basically Batman gets hooked on a performance-enhancing drug that basically turns him into a 90s anti-hero (muscles, sadism, etc.) and over time he starts to lose it, culminating in Alfred leaving him. If you're tired of Based Batgod this is a really good example of how human he really is.

Eh... the real answer is none of them are done perfectly, because addiction isn't a universally similar experience. People become addicted to substances differing degrees and it affects people in different ways.

Like, you could safely call The Dude in The Big Lebowski an addict (or dependence, depending on how you analyze the film), but his is not the tearful, dramatic kind of addiction.

You could similarly call Hunter S. Thomson an addict, but he was also an activist about his proclivities, and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas is a film that captures his essence quite well.

I'd recommend any of VICE's documentaries on drug use for a look at real life addiction and drug culture. The might be somewhat one sided but they are usually very accurate to real situations.

Sort of addiction like, but the other day I sort of realized that the Dark Spores in Digimon Adventure 02 were actually a lot like some kind of addictive intelligence/ability enhancing drug. One that if effected too much, has the alarming side effect of making one think like a sociopath.

They don't give you extra intelligence, they enhance your existing abilities and potential talents, and give you a huge (over)confidence boost to the point where you get a superiority complex when it's in you too deeply. It takes control of you.

The people who were given it, all had some reason for relying on it, whether it be wanting to do well in school(the kids in the later arc) or wanting to be just like the genius sibling they lost (Ken). It started out as their crutch until it took them over.

In both cases it required a sharp shock to snap the victim out of it. For Ken it was being defeated and watching his Digimon partner die. For the children it was finding out when they got to the Digital world that they were lied and used. (and having a big demon thing 'harvest' them)

The show never said the word addiction, but IMO there was a parallel there.

I think Elementary? He's a recovering addict and it's maintained throughout the whole series so far.

Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden deals with WWI-era morphine addiction. The novel isn't centred entirely around it, but it's still pretty important to the plot and character relationships.

It's a pretty good novel, definitely worth reading.

The tv show Leverage has Nate. He's an alcoholic, is sober for some time but mostly not. It's more of a theme than a storyline in the series, and the showrunner was a 'functioning alcoholic' so her knows what he's writing about.

As far as I can tell, Elementary has been doing a reasonably good job with the recovery plotline.
