Is it just me, or does anyone find this particular type of tinhatting -- the "casually behave as though it's a fact and you are in on the secret" type, rather than the idle speculation and gossip type -- really, really, really fucking creepy?

It's not a matter of whether it's true or plausible or not, it's just the tinhatters' self-satisfied, take-it-for-granted attitude gives me the crawling heebie-jeebies.

Yeah, it's creepy.

I don't like it at all when people insist they "know" all about someone else's love life/sexual orientation, etc.

Yeah, I find it way, way worse than speculative tinhatting. Even if they're fucking creepy too, at least they're not just flat out saying that their delusions are 100% reality.

It's not just you. I think that tinhatters like to feel like they possess some unique level of knowledge and intimacy of the people they're tinhatting, because that makes them more special than "regular" fans.

Abso-fucking-lutely. I don't mind speculative gossip and excited "omg omg are they dating????" celebrity stuff at all, but the kind of stuff here? Yeah, it makes my skin crawl.

Thank you to the anons above too, for articulating what makes it so creepy much better than I ever could.

Seriously. I really think they fantasize daily about meeting these people someday and receiving heartfelt thanks for "supporting" their relationship that's in no way imaginary, and for not being like those other dumb fans who are just interested in their acting or whatever. Like they're going to be invited to the wedding and regaled with stories of how the two of them totally would have broken up if not for that one tumblr post about how they wore the same kind of shoes that time or how x is definitely a bottom, teehee! So bizarre.

I think if you hear gossip often enough it's hard to ignore, even if you don't really believe it, or think it's none of your business. That's how advertising works and it's horribly effective.

That's what I was taking away from this secret, anyway, not that the OP thought they were some class of special, unblemished tinhatter.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. As if they know a damn thing about these people's personal lives, as if they're entitled to it. It's fucking creepy.

I'd take idle speculation and trashy gossip rags over this kind of thing.
