Given ALL THE REST OF IT COMBINED, still going with as bad.

Hannibal also wasn't explicitly told that all of those girls died horribly and were turned into food and goods in order to keep from killing her. Nor did he have his throat slit by his best beloved father and then watch him killed by the man who helps save her life. Etc.

Hannibal had a bad thing happen. It was not uniquely horrible above all other horrors, and others have suffered equal (no, not EXACT SAME, but equivalent) horrors and not turned into sadistic cannibal killers who, in turn, wreck those horrors on those who have done nothing meaningfully wrong.

One is of course free to love whichever characters one wishes, regardless of how bad they are! But no, his pain still does not justify or explain his atrocities.
