All dogs are potentially dangerous to smaller animals. The larger the dog, the higher the risk.

Doesn't necessarily mean the dog is aggressive or out for blood, just that they should be supervised with smaller "prey*" animals and strange animals should always be introduced slowly. Sounds like poor OP's cat was not introduced properly and as a result, this. That's all on the grandfolks for not being responsible with their dog.
