I'm the same, but for me I know it's because I'm not in deep enough, I enjoy the show a lot but I only skitter about the very edges of the fandom.

See, I think for me this means "I'm in too deep". I will read just about anything that is decently written, even if the setting and circumstances are pretty different (with exceptions; I've said this before, but things like Mass Effect and Dragon Age...can't do it. They have to be set in the canon universe) and the characters aren't exactly a hundred percent match. (I do need for them to be recognizable, though.)

Steven Universe is a show that AUs really well because of the depth of the characterisation. The Gems aren't mostly defined by being gems, they have a lot of characteristics that carry over in to, say, a high school AU.
