How is it hostile to react badly when someone blunders into fandom with the attitude that you're all wrong and you're not real fans and and clearly none of you understand the canon properly? OP said they don't attack people or try to start shit, but I'm sure we've all met Real Fans who try to "debate" you into agreeing with their interpretation of canon because it's the only right way to interpret it. People like that usually don't realize how combative and obnoxious they're being, so sometimes they get confused about why fandom isn't throwing thema ticker tape parade for showing them the One True Path.

Not to be the pedantic twat here, but I'm mightily tired of seeing personal biases, opinions and fanon being spread around and treated as fact. The canon status of Legolas/Gimli isn't a matter of "interpretation". You can't claim to that Sam being gay for Frodo is a legal reading of Lord of the Rings without coming across as spectacularly ignorant about the culture whence LotR came.

Fandom is about colouring outside the lines, so hey: write stories about what Lord of the Rings would be like of Sam was gay for Frodo. Draw comics about how Legolas-Gimli family dinners would end up. Feel free to play around with these characters and the world, that's why we're all here. Write 5k essays about why Sam and Frodo would be the cutest couple ever. Just... don't write 5k essays dissecting the novels for "hints" supporting your queer interpretation of it. The blanks you're claiming to fill in aren't empty.

I totally agree with this, and I'm someone who ships the hell out of a non-canon pairing. I just don't feel the need to believe my ship is actually canon. Would it be nice if it were canon? Like, five-Christmases-and-a-promotion levels of nice? Yup! But I prioritize "being in touch with reality" above "believing a thing because of how happy I would be if it were true."

There's nothing wrong with dissecting the novel to make a queer reading of it; you just have to retain a proportional outlook, and not mistake the strength of your interest in it for evidence

(also picking Sam and Frodo is a pretty bad choice of an example tbqh)

That? That is bad, and if you casually stroll into a forum and treat people like you don't consider them "real" fans because they don't see canon the exact same way you do, you're going to have a bad time to match with your bad attitude.

Uh huh. If someone's "debate" and "honest reviews" come off as trolling attempts, they're doing something wrong. OP is already aware that they must not be expressing themselves well, but they can't quite put a finger on why. My guess is that they sound a lot more aggressive and judgmental than they realize.
