I think you're missing the point. The point isn't to train yourself to like ice cream, it's to train yourself NOT to think contemptuously of everyone who doesn't share your love of ice cream. It's to train yourself not to "debate" with people who like cake and just leave them in peace with their cake while you rock on with your bad self enjoying your ice cream.

But you see, right now, you truly believe you're doing fandom the right way and they're doing it the wrong way. That approach will never win, and it will never result in positive fandom interaction.

Well put.

Be tolerant of anyone with a different opinion to you (because, you know, they probably see your opinions as just as weird) but then search out like-minded souls and enjoy their company, creating your own mini-corner of fandom.

There's absolutely no need to follow the herd to enjoy fandom.
