This is true. Although, sometimes it is justified if the two pairings are different and how the character relates depending on who they are paired with changes. There is this one character who I have two main ships for, and how he relates to each of the other characters is very different so I'm expecting the characterization to be different. Especially if it is in the POV of the other character who only sees the side of the one character that the character shows them.

Obviously it's natural that the character would be shown in a different light and have a different dynamic... but in this case, it's to the point where some of his prominent character traits get swept completely under the rug, or changed.
For example, he'll go from being someone with iron self-control to a needy mess who needs somebody else to control him, or seesaw between being loyal and compassionate towards others to being myopically obsessed with one person and indifferent towards everybody else.
Some shift is natural, but sometimes it can go straight into the OOC sunset.

Yes, you want the characterisation to match what is portrayed in the media. What's objectionable is when in a story Character A who is a tough SOB, suddenly becomes a delicate flower around Character B because they are sleeping together, when in the media Characters A and B have a relationship of equals.
