Obviously it's natural that the character would be shown in a different light and have a different dynamic... but in this case, it's to the point where some of his prominent character traits get swept completely under the rug, or changed.
For example, he'll go from being someone with iron self-control to a needy mess who needs somebody else to control him, or seesaw between being loyal and compassionate towards others to being myopically obsessed with one person and indifferent towards everybody else.
Some shift is natural, but sometimes it can go straight into the OOC sunset.
