Your most depressing birthday?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-02 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's my birthday. Nobody really was interested in going out or doing anything. I feel kind of sad and I'm sitting here eating Wheat Thins. Tell me your shitty birthday stories.

Awakened before dawn, crying hysterically for hours, and the worst grocery store deli case carrot cake ever. As a result, I no longer celebrate my birthday.

You can be awesome all by yourself, anon. Good luck.

All of them except for two. My birthday is January 1st so everyone is hung over on the day. Before the day, people have got celebration fatigue. After the day is that weird holiday hangover. And we are out of school so no one is in town.

Most of my birthdays consisted of my siblings and my dad. A couple of times, my dad's friends would come by to eat some cake.

Happy birthday. <3

Most depressing birthday, hmmm... Probably the one after my Grandpa died. That ruined Thanksgiving and Christmas too.

same, only it's both grandparents, for me.

It was my 7th birthday, and I had chickenpox. No party, because I was highly contagious. :(

I couldn't much help having to lie around scratching, but hey, don't mope. Treat yourself to something special and celebrate by yourself!

Happy birthday!!!

I definitely know that feeling of no one being interested in going out or whatever... but here's the thing, you should be celebrating yourself anyway. Get out there, have an adventure! Go to a movie, go shopping and spoil yourself, go hiking somewhere, get a massage. Or buy your favorite flavor of ice cream and have an epic Netflix marathon night.

My worst birthday, well I don't think I've had any that are really terrible, but I've had to scrape to get a few people together one year and no one seemed particularly interested, so I know what you feel. But go on and have yourself an awesome personal day.

Re: Your most depressing birthday?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-02 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of them, really. My birthday is usually just my mom or my dad (they're divorced) and sometimes a sibling. I think the worst one was the summer after I got my bachelors, a few of us were still on campus working or whatever but no one even came over to tell me happy birthday, not even the guy friend who had said he would make me a cake.

My birthday was last week and I spent the entire day reading my thesis after it had been rejected to figure out what went wrong. That was pretty miserable.

Happy birthday, anon.

Mine's tomorrow and I'm not doing anything, but my parents are coming out the day after. That will be nice.

First, happy birthday!! I ran into that same situation this year, and it is not fun. It sucks that one day can get so much meaning clumped onto it.

My worst birthday was a few years ago, when I got the flu AND laryngitis. Nothing says birthday fun like driving yourself to the minute clinic, and the nurse going "Oh! Oh." when you tell her your date of birth.

Re: Your most depressing birthday?

I was... sometime in my early 20s, turning 23 I want to say, and my birthday was on a Sunday. So I neglected to really plan or organize anything (so really it's my fault), texted people a couple days before to see if anything was up. Like, I wasn't even trying to do a birthday thing, I just wanted to hang out with a few friends. Unfortunately for whatever reason everyone I knew already had plans and so I ended up tagging along with a friend of mine to a thing that I didn't care about, with a bunch of people I either didn't know or didn't care for, and spending the whole evening in socially anxious hell, and not even getting drunk. And then the next day I went out for dinner with my folks, and they were like "Hey, we decided we'd go to this museum first, want to come?" and I really didn't but I didn't feel I could say no, so I spent all afternoon bored out of my mind at a museum I didn't like with my parents before going to dinner at a place I didn't even want to go to. And that was my birthday weekend.

I don't know. It's really not that bad looking at it objectively. But at the time it just really bothered me because it was just completely devoid of anything that I liked or enjoyed or gave a shit about. A whole weekend of feeling like I needed to be gracious about not really enjoying anything that I was doing. Just a completely pointless, unpleasant waste of a weekend, that also happened to be my birthday.

I had to do summer school the year I turned 16. The first day was on my birthday but for a reason I can't remember (probably laziness on my behalf), I didn't go. So my mom punished me, on my birthday. And to rub it in, she said I couldn't have my present, which was driving lessons. I felt so hurt that she would punish me for something so dumb that I literally spent the whole damn day crying. Family and friends called me all day and I had to try so hard to sound like I wasn't crying and heartbroken. Fucking awful birthday.

Bonus: Turns out that whole first week of school was a bust cuz my school couldn't get their shit together so I learned nothing that week and part of the next.

Double bonus: I also never learned how to drive, to this day, 13 years later.

I had scarlet fever on my birthday once. :/

My sister's birthday was Friday, and it was her 18th, and we had a big family dinner planned - and then my mom had to go out of town because my grandpa was dying, so she missed it and we had to postpone. She was a very good sport about it, but I'm sure it wasn't a good experience (she was also sad about grandpa).

Oh yay, I'm going to win this thread.

My mum died while I was at my own birthday party, after we had an argument about me not spending enough time having fun and hanging out with my friends. She called my friend's mum and asked her to throw me a small sleepover party, and I went because I thought it would make her happy, thinking I'd see her in the morning and we'd make up and everything would be fine.

My family repeatedly kept trying to throw me surprise parties for the next three or four years I think. It fucking sucked. Like, there's hating your birthday and then there's hating your birthday in a room full of people who know why you hate your birthday and are trying to somehow make something be okay when it's really not.

The only person I will make an effort for is the relative I share a birthday with, and it's usually just to call and let her know I'm thinking of her on this, our day of deep unhappiness.

The nicest thing anyone has ever done for me on my birthday was to pretend that it wasn't my birthday. God bless you, you perfect human being.

For the third year in a row my bff bailed on my birthday. We were going swimming with sharks, I had won two tickets. The idea was to have fun and take pictures of each other.

She didn't "feel well" and stayed home. I went. It was fun but I have no pictures of myself swimming with sharks. Did get lots of shark videos though.

We are not bff anymore and I'm very leery around birthdays. I'm tentatively hoping my coworkers will make me a cake this year. They forgot last year while doing a mass September birthday bash. Which was also upsetting. So I've made a big point of pointing it out this year.

Oh and the one where the family did some stupid road trip and my bday was in the middle of it. I got to pick dinner, my brother got to adopt a puppy. Because he has Aspergers and was going through hard times and I was "probably leave a dog behind when you go to uni". Well go figure I took my pets when I went to uni and that dog was ditched at my folks by my brother. 14 years later I finally have my own dog but still pretty pissed I had to wait so long. We both could have gotten one. Who gives the other kid a dog on the kids birthday.

But yeah it sucks. I'm sorry this happened to you OP. :( you deserve a whole cake. Can you go do something awesome by yourself? Go see a movie? Treat yourself anon!

well shit belladonna wins this one, but I'll still add to the train.

I've had a lot of very depressing, lonely birthdays. Mostly my late 20's and a fair number of the 30s. the year one well-meaning friend put together a group dinner out with 12 people I hate when all I wanted was a dinner with her and her husband. the years nobody wanted to do anything and most didn't even remember my birthday. the year all the rsvps to my party turned into nobody showing up.

but the most depressing of all was the one I spent in Albuquerque NM, alone. I had flown out there to a job interview, but I ended up turning down the job, so as soon as I gave them that news, they wanted nothing more to do with me. wouldn't even give me a ride to the airport. I was a thousand miles from anyone I knew, didn't fly out till later in the day, and my "birthday dinner" was the shittiest burger ever at Stuckey's. on my own dime.

but hey, the company went under six months later so bullet dodged I guess.

Happy birthday! ヾ(*⌒ヮ⌒*)ゞ

Hmm though... I can't really think of a shitty birthday story though. We're not... 'big' birthday people in my family, usually we just get together for dinner, cake, and some gifts. And no one's forgotten someone's that I can recall, so... ._.

I'm sorry you're not having fun! I would make you a cake if you were here! Any excuse for desserts. >.>

I spent my sweet sixteen in the waiting room of a hospital waiting for the doctor to tell me whether or not I was going to be an orphan.

It also didn't help that I was fat, ugly and friendless.

This past birthday I was well in the mires of my first real experience with grief. I was crying pretty much all day. At least I was alone so nobody asked why I was upset or worse, why I was upset on my birthday.

I'm turning 30 in November and I'll probably be too busy with my dissertation defense to really celebrate.

I'll make sure the defense party makes up for it.
