lol I'm genuinely worried about someone from my quite conservative family (my mom's side of the family is basically all together in my aunt's house right now) seeing this comment over my shoulder

but uh, I dislike the military as an institution and disagree with the wars we've been in...but in a general sense, I support the troops themselves, as in, individual soldiers. some are more worthy of respect than others though.

I assume you come from a country which still has conscription so that people have to serve in that corrupt institution and not just those who sign up willingly and freely to be corrupt and prosecute bad wars? Supporting the troops themselves is excusable if they have no choice to be there, if they chose then they deserve the same amount of respect as the cause itself.

I guess it's a mix of 1. knowing people who are in the military (including family members and friends) who truly believe they are doing good, and thus are good people even if I disagree and 2. I think a lot of people who join are lower-income people and it's the best way for them to make money and especially to afford to go to school.

It's not that simple in the US. I think your stance is noble, but when it comes down to the individual level, and the way our country is structured so people can't go to school as easily and don't have the same number of options as they would in a more progressive country - it's no wonder people do it even if they don't really know what they're getting into. The military also does a loooooot of marketing.

As they do here in Australia. They were looking particularly sticking-out and lonely at the last geek convention I went to however. I guess they figured that geeks liked swords and fighting and shit so we'd like signing up to do it IRL.

That is a very strange marketing choice on their part.
