I dunno. Hollywood has tons of middle aged men who are still considered sexy and marketed as such in films. It's middle aged women who are usually SOL unless they're Helen Mirren. Even when the lead is a guy in his mid to late 40s or older, his female love interest will be younger than 35.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-03 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I even saw a chart of it. Guys in their 20s/30s have love interests in their 20s/30s. Guys in their 50s/60s have love interests in their 20s/30s.

Even if it's not meant to be a relationship between an older man and a younger woman, the man can be played by a 40 year old and the woman by a 25 year old. And you're supposed to think of them as being the same age.

nayrt

I kind of assumed the OP is a guy, mostly because the 'older = sexy' trope is conventionally limited to men.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-03 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's not news to men that them being older can be sexier, whereas it is for women, and fandom is one of the few places where women wholesale put themselves in men's shoes/see from a male perspective. Plenty of women want to BE the Doctor for instance.

It might be news to a man who's not particularly aware of the double standard, which is... well, potentially a lot of men. Men also have doubts and concerns about their physical appearance as they age, and plenty of them don't realize that as bad as they might have it, women are likely to be under even greater pressure to maintain a certain physical standard as they get older. (And in the case of Hollywood and acting, that still will not be enough.)

Yep, this. The age gap usually isn't addressed at all, as if it's invisible or we're supposed to think that of course handsome middle aged guys would only date twenty year olds! They couldn't possibly be interested in a woman who's say, within 5 years of their own age!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
And of course a twenty year old woman always wants to date some middle-aged guy, even if he's not rich or anything.

Yeah wrinkles are supposed to add wisdom and authority to a man, neither thing which is considered attractive for a woman :(

Helen Mirren is a horrible person and I wish her career would disappear. I wouldn't bother walking across the street to throw water on her if she was on fire.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
?????!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Lets just say I was forced to be around her because of an internship. If she felt you were below her she had no problem treating you like a peasant. Not everyone I have worked with in the industry has been all rainbows and unicorns but she was the only one that made it clear that unless you "are someone" you aren't fit to breath her air. Queen Helen is a royal cunt.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
Telling tales out of school is clear peasant behavior, and she treated you like you deserve.

The Helen Mirren Exception is truth. Everyone is so self-congratulatory that there's one woman over 50 on the entire planet they could hypothetically stand to bone.

The "Last Fuckable Day" skit on Inside Amy Schumer was a great encapsulation of this (nsfw audio, obvs): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPpsI8mWKmg

Personally, I feel hopeful when I feel some actors aging damn well.

I'll hate getting older either way, but if I can still look good hen older that might buffer the blow.

Same. Of course they have access to resources we don't (though I don't think that's the case with Capaldi). Still, I like to think that I can be a hot geezer.

Oh man, day to day I'm not sure if I'm going to be forever young or if my age is going to catch up with me (sooner or later), but yes, there are def celebs that age gracefully and I want that, so IA. (I'm no rich celeb, but... Maybe I could get lucky. Maybe...)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-03 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that works. If you're a dude.
