I don't really ship and consume in much the same way. Difference is I wish for more gen and long for positive notice.

As a reader, I'd like more gen, too. But I'm content to just read and not be involved in any meta discussions or general fandom squee.

Just as long as you throw the gen authors the occasional comment or kudos. Gen writers are a vanishing breed in too many fandoms.

ayrt - Oh, absolutely. I always comment on fics I enjoyed to let the writer know there are readers out there who appreciate their time and effort.
