Someone on tumblr actually questioned why I was making posts about a particular wrestler if I wasn't a fan and I was like "because I fucking want to and I have an opinion that you can easily ignore?" Then they, a fan of this particular person, tried to scare me off being a fan too. Like, who wants less people to talk about your fave with? But, I guess your fandom friend is the same. If you don't like it the same way they do they get all pissy. I follow a few people like that (and they are about the unfollowed, tbh) who make a post, and if someone responds to it with a different opinion they get all defensive and pissy with "it was just a joke" or "you're wrong because..."

This reminds me of a time in fandom that a person made this post about a character they didn't like, griping about people liking the character and complaining about why the character didn't die in canon and why they should have. No actual reason beyond "they really annoy me they should have died"

They got really pissy and snippy when people disagreed with the last bit and dared to explain their opinion about it. I was left wondering "what did you expect?"

Like I could get "I don't like this character" but "I don't like them and they should die" is kind of drastic.

Lemme guess, they're the type who make posts like "friendly reminder that x is this!" or "people who think x is this when they are really this (aka their headcanons) are just dumb and can unfollow me."

I dunno about the wrestling fan because I don't follow them. They have responded to my posts about him before and I just ignore them usually because they are one of those bitter, salty wrestling fans that suck the life out of the fandom. (Wrestling fandom really sucks, tbh, and if you find fun people to talk with about it, HANG ON TO THEM for dear life because they are rare.)

The other person is a young Londo (Babylon 5) stan, and maybe I'm getting crotchety in my old age, but young stans are the worst when it comes to getting pissy about their opinions and headcanons on media. Like, I can get heated about certain things, but overall I'm willing to either listen to your shitty opinion or ignore it if it's too awful. Like, you think Londo is trans? Cool, whatever. I could see it. But don't go telling me I'm wrong for not writing him as trans, for example

Whoa-ho. I know exactly who you're talking about in the second case. Didn't they actually harass someone out of the fandom once? I've had them blocked the moment tumblr made doing so actually effective. What sketches me out the most about them is the way they passive-aggressively badmouth other people's opinions or fanworks. Now that they're blocked, I know that if they refer to anything I've produced, it's because they deliberately chose to view my content, despite professing their distaste. Ah, it's a wonderful feeling.

i don't know if this person harassed someone out of fandom or not. They are totally passive aggressive about fanworks and other people's opinions though, so maybe it's the same person? Details on the supposed harassment? Because I've been following this person since they started watching B5 and I don't recall things getting that bad. But, yeah, they made a "joke" post the other day, and someone responded with legit response to their issues about canon and they got a pissy like "it was just a joke at btw you're wrong." I almost unfollowed them, but I dunno. I enjoy my irritation at them still. Someday, they will be unfollowed, but today is not that day.

Sometimes it's hard to ignore shitty opinions though. I saw this post about how this person was disappointed by Janeway two episodes into Voyager because she made the decision to save an alien race over her crew's life back in the Alpha quadrant and also how awful is she for not trusting the Maquis. Uh. What kind of shitty captain would she have been if just let the Ocampa die? That's not very Star Trek. And, the Maquis are TERRORISTS TO THE FEDERATION? Like, how much would you trust the members of a terrorist organization that you were tasked with hunting down? Probably not very much. Luckily someone got to it before me, because I would have been all over that post.

They definitely harassed someone out of the fandom, maybe a little under a year ago? A little after I’d joined the fandom, actually, at the risk of outing myself. It’s definitely the same person we’re thinking of because the conflict concerned the trans headcanon you mentioned. Details are hard to come by because they, predictably, deleted the entire exchange. They still bring up the conflict from time to time though. “Hey, remember when ‘x’ said ‘blah’ to me?” or “Friendly reminder that ‘x’ is a transphobic piece of shit.” That kind of thing. Even though the person has basically abandoned the fandom aside from the odd reblog here and there. Given that they deleted the posts, I don’t remember exactly what was said, but I do strongly recall that the person who ended up leaving the fandom was actually supportive of the headcanon itself? The issue was more that they were an older fan who wasn’t exactly up to par with the current trends in trans discourse on tumblr and so might have used an outdated term or something. Of course, they weren’t given a chance to explain themselves before the person jumped down their throat.

Also yeah, I saw that post reblogged on my dash. Funny how it’s only a “joke” when someone disagrees.

I didn’t catch the Voyager posts, but oh man. Don’t even get me started on the Maquis, but wow. I’m glad that somebody responded, but still, it must have taken a lot of restraint not to contest that. It’s a bit of a weird situation when fans are so young, because there’s always the possibility that they’ll smarten up later and maybe need a wide berth to make mistakes without someone calling them out. As an older fan, it’s difficult to escape the feeling that you’re picking on low hanging fruit when you want to correct someone so much younger. But I don’t know, I feel like this person crossed a line a long time ago, and I eagerly await the day when someone’s finally fed up with their bullshit.

No, you should out yourself so I can make sure I follow you because we like the same things, it seems. Though, if you are who I think, I probably already do. (That sounds so sinister and creepy, ha.)

A little over a year ago would have been toward the tail end of my most active in that fandom, seeing as I was most active during my watch of Babylon 5 in April and just a few months after. But, I believe there was some other Londo drama around that time from people who hated the character, so I might have been distracted by that and ignoring all Londo-related drama.

Aha, yes, we are already mutuals, I believe. I'm a little shy, so I don't think we've ever talked before, beyond the occasional like or reblog. You seem really awesome, though, and I've enjoyed your B5 fic! (Honestly, I feel like the creeper here for being all anonymous. I had a Dreamwidth account a long time ago, but I never really used it.)

Hope you don't mind me chiming in, but are you active in other forums for wrestling fans? I'm not a fan, but I'm very active in the futbol section of the SB Nation sites (they remind me of LJ where SBN is the mothership and then you have sites that work like communities for its members. I remember having heard that, while the futbol blog I frequent is bay far the beggiest futbol comm, the heaviest traffic SBN gets is in their pro wrestling comm. I don't remember the name (but it's easy to search by sport type in SBN) but I remember clicking on a live thread to see how they are and got amazed by how cordial everybody were with each other.

You might like those ppl in SBN if you want more people to talk about wrestling.

Oh, that's not a place I've heard of. I pretty much only post here, tumblr and failfandomanon, so I'll check it out. I've been avoiding a lot of the places my fiancé posts (like reddit) because they are male dominated and I don't like the way men tend to be dissmissive of female fans opinions. (Even my fiancé does this.)

Oh yeah, that's understandable. I lurked in the site I'm now frequenting (it's a Chelsea FC blog) for half a year before I joined because I was afraid of how they'd take a girl commenting among them. (I'm still very much the minority, there are thousands of members of the site and only a handful of girls--frequent commenters are probably 100+ and only 3 of us are girls, but in my personal experience in the Chelsea site? I've been treated way (wayyyy) worse for whom I supported in a female-dominated comm, ontd_football, than I've ever been in an SBN comm.

Granted, this falls to how strict the mods are, but they don't allow political discussions in SBN, it's a place for sports after all) and they generally don't allow slurs. If you know what the futbol community is outside of SBN (they're toxic, and you can't get a discussion going without people flinging shit at each other--like in the Daily Mail comment section and Reddit), the blog I frequent is a breath of fresh air. I think I behave better there than in most place, cause the mods won't even suffer me snarking, lol. That one takes a little adjustment, I was raised by wolves F_W, but I've been told to tone down the snark before, so I did ^^;;
