As a general rule, I feel like it's best to just assume people are arguing in good faith unless they display flagrant evidence otherwise.

I know... it's just that I've had way too many internet conversations where I have assumed good faith over something like this, and ended up with them being a massive trolly tool all along, and wasted a lot of time/felt naive. So I'm jaded... but yeah, I'll concede it's generally the best approach, and especially here :)
