I like that guy's face.

Then might I present for your consideration Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, affectionately known as the Brig? Definitely the Alistair of my formative years, and the reason I'm rather fond of the name myself.

This tends to happen with me and loads of fandom names as well. And not just fandom names. If I meet a couple of RL people with the same name who are unpleasant I'll start disliking the name.

OMG someone who likes Alistair and hasn't decided he's representative of the patriarchy!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
...what? That's just... what? *Brain boggle* He's a great guy! What do SJWs even want, ffs?

Okay, so I'll try to give you the arguments.

-He's privileged.
-He complains all the time despite being privileged.
-He doesn't want to listen to anyone else complain.
-He's very self-absorbed in general.
-He pulls a "nice guy" act if you choose him as your LI.

lol

Why can't people just be okay with disliking a character without feeling some need to be all self-righteous over it?

Like, IMO, Alistair is a really boring character, overwhelmingly corny and I always felt a lot of second-hand embarrassment about him. But ALL of the Origins characters are uninteresting, unoriginal clichés, so I can't really hold it against him specifically.

Alistair's only redeeming quality to me was that he was overwhelmingly corny, but I blame that on my husband and his family finally stockholming me into loving terrible puns.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
...I don't think anyone actually thinks that. Do they? The fandom is basically 98.5% girls who want to make Alistair their husbando. Maybe that 1.5% is just really bitter?

Maybe I just landed in really weird circles? All the Alistair talk I come across is about how awful he is.

That's all I've seen too when it comes to Alistair, but I don't doubt that there is a subsection that hates him (I'm pretty sure every companion from the DA games have very radical lovers and haters, because this fandom does not seem to do middle grounds very well).

For my part, it's the Anders lovers/haters that I seem to run into the most.

I'm sort of the reverse -- my biggest crush ever was on a man named Alistair, so when I played DA:O I was predisposed to love Alistair the character, even if he had been awful.

The fact that he wasn't awful but was actually a sweetheart *and* voiced by Steve Valentine, whom I adored in "Crossing Jordan", was like delicious icing on a delicious cake.

I always really liked the name, even before the character.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no... I love Dragon Age Alistair as much as anyone, but I hate the name. It just sounds like... the stage name a magician takes, or you know, like Satanism or some weird DARKNESS RAAAAR type name.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's Aleister Crowley's fault.

...How many other Alistair's are there? I can't think of any atm, but I'm probably overlooking one (or two) I'm familiar with.

Alistair IS a great name, but I don't think a name has ever been enough to sway my opinion on a character.

Given how much I love this guy, this probably would have happened to me ... if I hadn't come across Alistair Crane from Passions first.
