A part of me inexplicably loves him best in his bit part in "Drive," that one episode of The X-Files where his character has to drive west or his head will explode. That episode also helped me transition from thinking of him as Hal (OTT comedy) to thinking of his as Walter (dark as fuck). Patrick Crump (his character in TXF) was just such a tragic figure, and Cranston played the creepy tragedy of his circumstances really well, no comedy in sight.
