Seriously didn't know. Is that really so hard to believe? I've only seen half an episode of Breaking Bad.

Oh, okay. If you'd watched both series fully I think it'd be hard to not see they're the same person.

He's a talented guy though so I guess it's possible.

I only saw a few episodes of Malcolm when I was a kid, but recently saw all of Breaking Bad (very very late to the party, and know nothing of the fandom if there is one) and yeah, very recently realized they were the same person. Oops.

He was extremely underrated back when he played Hal and that show isn't appreciated enough.

I loved him in Malcolm in the Middle, he was great. It was actually part of the reason I had trouble getting into Breaking Bad because I thought of him as such a good guy it was hard to see him as a villain.

Really? I thought Hal was kind of a douche. I mean, clearly not as bad as Walter White, but not really an amazing guy.

There were a few episodes where I could see Hal as not being that great and there was that flashback where you saw that he could be a jerk, but I always thought of his character as a good intentioned sweet guy who made mistakes sometimes. I also thought his love for Lois was really sweet and that he really loved his family. He was definitely a goof but I don't know if a douche would really describe him, at least from my interpretation.

When hearing about Walter White it just felt like opposite day for me at first.

Yeah, same. Hal alwas felt like to me as someone who tried really hard, but sort of fails at it. He seems like one of those people who shouldn't have had kids, but he did anyway, and he does love them - he just has no idea what to do with them half of the time.

That's true. And I will add my apprehension about Walter White had nothing to do with his acting abilities, it's just weird sometimes when you're used to an actor in one role and that role got so burned into your brain you don't see them as different types of characters.

Yeah, when I see him in other works my first though is always "dad from Malcolm in the Middle!", not Breaking Bad.

I like to think of Breaking Bad as validating my crush on Hal, which my friends and family teased me for a LOT. Not so inexplicable now, huh?! Jerks.

I've not seen BB so I can't comment on that but I really enjoyed him as Hal in Malcolm in the Middle, but I loved that show in general.

he got multiple emmy nominations for malcolm in the middle so i don't think that's an entirely unpopular opinion.

I remember still being surprised to see him in Breaking Bad because I'm so used to him being in goofy roles. Good on him that he can play both comedy and dramatic roles successfully.

A part of me inexplicably loves him best in his bit part in "Drive," that one episode of The X-Files where his character has to drive west or his head will explode. That episode also helped me transition from thinking of him as Hal (OTT comedy) to thinking of his as Walter (dark as fuck). Patrick Crump (his character in TXF) was just such a tragic figure, and Cranston played the creepy tragedy of his circumstances really well, no comedy in sight.
