I can see Bioware having you date someone in an open relationship (wasn't that Kelly's schtick, actually?) But I can't see them doing a well-written romance where three people are all involved with each other. I think they'd turn it into some kind of power fantasy about having two people hanging off you.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I don't know that triads couldn't work, at least. It's not really that much different than a two person relationship, except for small things. I think it would be even less difficult to swing if two companions were stated to already be together as an established couple whom you had the option to join in. But I'd take anything, TBH, even the kind of situation you said. I'm kind of pathetically in need of this.

As a side note: Banter for poly stuff would be awesome. Partners talking AND other companions talking about the relationship(s), yes please!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. That's actually one of the big stated reasons why they don't plan on doing poly relationships any time soon. The most resource-friendly way to implement it would be to go the way of the various free love mods and just do away with the relationship checks for some/all of the characters, which produces exactly the scenario you're talking about.

To actually implement a poly romance properly, in which the characters interacted with each other as well as the protagonist, would require a lot more variable processing. You'd need to check relationship scores with respect to one another, relationship stages with respect to one another, etc. It'd also eat up a considerable amount of the characters' dialogue budget, since there would have to be mono-romance scenes and poly-romance scenes and no romance scenes for each character. The juggling act eats up even more resources if you want to make all or most LIs potentially poly, rather than just saying "you can be in a triad with these two characters only".

It'd be easier if they had a pair of characters who were established as a couple and had to be recruited and romanced together, no exceptions, but given the amount of fan backlash that would (provably, because they've done matched set characters before) generate, they're unlikely to take that route.

There's a mod for that!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

But I don't want to have to do that. I want actual, non-hax, in-game poly.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
...you can have a foursome in Origins?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
OP

And it's promptly shoved under the rug and forgotten, never to be spoken of again. Just like the possible threesome in DA2. But how dare I ask for more than partly tidbits, yes?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Besides, a foursome/threesome does not poly make. Polyamory is about love, not just sex. I could be in an orgy of a million people and not be poly with any of them.

No one wants a slut option.

Bah, humbug.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I do. Not OP, but totally. I'm not even thinking about polyamory or whatever. I just make it my goal in Dragon Age to sleep with absolutely everyone. With Origins, I just modded to take away gender restrictions, but beyond that, legitimately slept with everybody in a single night at camp. So mad that Inquisition made that impossible.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
OH NOES, we can't have positive poly characters! If some one like me is seen as a good person then the world will blow up!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Everyone wants the slut option. ;)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
lol this. pretty sure ayrt wasn't serious anyway, but I'm relatively confident 95% or more of Dragon Age players try and two time for as long as possible until they are forced to choose one.

Huh. I'd never thought about that before but uh, hell yeah I'd be totally down for that. Granted I'd be worried that it'd be written a tad unequal, with having both the LI's all over the PC and not into each other as well, but if it was done as an equal partnership for all parties involved I think that could be fun.

I actually remember David Gaider talking about that on his deleted tumblr. Someone who also would like poly options sent and ask and asked about the possiblility. I think Gaider said, he had briefly thought about the possiblity before (I think in general, and not in connection to a specific game or character), but said that it would also be more complicated to write and implement on a gaming level. The thing is, that instead of writing one relation ship, relationships between each of the characters would need to be established, which would be more work. At the same time there are questions about how it would work in game.

Based on what he wrote sadly I don't think they are going to write a poly romance anytime soon, but I also think that the main reason for that is the additional work and not a general unwillingness. So finger's crossed that they still might some day.

Neverwinter Nights, Overlord 2, Duel Savior Destiny, Grandia II, Phantasmagoria 2, School Days, Cross Days, Summer Session, and Long Live the Queen, may all be games relevant to OP's interests.

I don't know most of those, but I do NOT recommend Duel Savior Destiny. When you get subversive by having a setting where women dominate men, then have a man break the system and use it to dominate women, it winds up being the same creepy dubcon dominance porn it's supposed to be mocking.

(I spent half a day getting this game to stop crashing long enough to play it. So many regrets . . .)

I thought it was an option for Jade Empire and NWN:HoU.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ish.

If you had high enough persion and charisma scores, you could get multiple characters hooked up with you in an ending slide in HoU, but there was no real in-game content outside that one conversation. There was also some weirdness in that the RNG for the True Name of the PC's soulmate didn't always take into account their locked-in romace, so you'd occasionally get an ending slide for the romance and one for the angel dude, but that was a glitch and they usually contradicted each other.

IIRC, Jade Empire was similar re: the persuade convo, with an added option to politically marry the princess and keep your lover on the side.

I hope they do it some day. By the way, developers have said joining an established couple is a lot more feasible in the future than a triad with any characters available for romance because the first would be hard but the second would be a programming nightmare.

Me, I have simpler needs. I just wish they allowed some open relationships - or at least didn't push the jealousy/monogamy for every relationship. I carefully managed to roleplay an open relationship with Zevran in DAO but in DA2 canon didn't ruin it only because of a glitch. (Without the glitch, Zevran would have refused a threesome because of monogamy.) And in DA2 I roleplayed one by not taking my LI with me to certain places and quests. Seems to be even harder in DAI but I haven't been able to play it yet.

I def think it would be good if BioWare branched out even more (poly and asexual relationships)... there are people who would feel great seeing themselves represented onscreen and others that might find it enjoyable to play those romances even if they don't identify as such.

I mean, wank would happen, but wank happens no matter what so I don't see why that would be a deterrent; you can never make everyone happy, and BioWare fandom seems to be...pickier than most.

It is a fun idea, but even before I read comments about what has been said by Gaider, I figured it would be devilishly hard to implement in a game (maybe it could be done for a dedicated dating game, but not for an adventure game that is supposed to have large tracts of other things included).

This sort of wish is what I rely on fanfic to supply, but even then, threesomes (especially involving character combinations I like) are not something a lot of writers write about.

Yes yes yes yesssss!

Also, I enjoy the background image you used OP. Off to the kinkmeme!
