I think the term Mary Sue can be useful just as an explanation or a reason why you don't like a character.

But the problem with the term for a lot of people, is just how many meanings it holds for different people. If you ask a bunch of different people who know what the term means, many of them will probably have different standards for what a Mary Sue is. I've been on writing forums where people hotly debated exactly what made a character a Mary Sue. At this point it'e pretty much been used for many different kinds of bad characters.

At this point it's pretty much been used for many different kinds of bad characters.

And for some decent/good ones simply because of said standards being applied universally instead of considering the context. I.e. if the canon has a species capable of flight I'm pretty sure a character of said species isn't a Sue just because they can fly.

Oh Lord yes. That's my biggest problem with the whole concept of "Mary Sue Traits" in general. Traits are good or bad depending on context. You can't take something like "the character can fly" and claim it's just always a sue trait.

Context is really important for determining something like that.
