But the problem with the term for a lot of people, is just how many meanings it holds for different people. If you ask a bunch of different people who know what the term means, many of them will probably have different standards for what a Mary Sue is. I've been on writing forums where people hotly debated exactly what made a character a Mary Sue. At this point it'e pretty much been used for many different kinds of bad characters.

I.e. if the canon has a species capable of flight I'm pretty sure a character of said species isn't a Sue just because they can fly.

Context is really important for determining something like that.
