So... Mary Sues aren't Mary Sues - nay, a bad character isn't a bad character - until we prove we are just as outraged by canon Gary Stus?

Yes? Otherwise, these sorts of characters are just evidence of women wanting the same toys as guys. Which *is* a little dumb, but women are just people, not creatures superior to men, and people are a little dumb.

I don't really get what you're saying?

Media is chock-full of male characters who are clearly meant to be self-insert male power fantasies, yet hardly anyone calls out these characters or criticizes them to the same degree that people do female characters.

Got it in one.

I don't think "self-insert power fantasy" is what the OP or anyone in this thread is talking about when they say Mary Sue, though. See also the Mary Sue discussion in the GC on page 2. A real Mary Sue is a character that makes the story bad and the other characters OOC just so the Sue can look awesome. Power fantasies don't have to be that. They can well-written. A Mary Sue/Gary Stu cannot.

And... so, what's the point? That Mary Sues shouldn't be criticized? Because that's what the original anon was getting at. I criticize both Gary Stus and Mary Sues, because neither is an interesting character.

And I wouldn't say "power fantasy" = "Mary Sue/Gary Stu" either. They can overlap, but are not inherently the same thing.
