All the poisonous animals put Australia on the "NOOOOO" list for me.

The prevalence is amazingly overrated by foreigners, and Australians love to exaggerate. But seriously, if you live in a densely populated area and only occasionally go for a bushwalk in the wilds, you will probably never see a poisonous animal, not even a redback spider or a snake, in your whole lifetime.

* Should clarify this means in the biggest densest populated places, ie in temperate southern climates. In the north you might find a brown snake facing off your dog in your back yard. Just avoid the north in general if you're of the timid sort. But I can go all day here in the south without seeing a single insect, let alone things that want to hurt you.

I have run into a redback twice in my life, and my mother has encountered snakes a couple of times, but even when we lived in Funnelweb central for a couple of years, we never saw any.

In reality, if you remember to be wary when you see spiders (and snakes if you ever see them), and learn some basic precautions before bushwalking, then you do fine.
