I loved Tamora Pierce growing up! I haven't read any of her books in many years though, and sometimes I think I should go back and give them another shot... Even if they don't quite hold up.

Don't think I ever read this series, though. As for Mary Sue... Yea, people overuse the term (And frankly it has a lot of different meanings to a lot of different people), but if it fits just use canon sue. (And honestly, while I like characters to have flaws because it makes them human, interesting and relatable, this kind of thing bothering me a great deal or not depends on the specifics.)

There's a reasonable chance they won't quite hold up. The writing is kind of unpolished, and it's true - Alanna is flawed in that she's not quite flawed enough, though I always found Daine to be the worst. I never felt like Daine actually struggled to overcome anything.

This series is newer. I actually thought it was better than some of her older stuff in terms of plotting and flow, though the criticism is legitimate.

I re-read them about two years ago. I think the entire Tortall series. (The Circle books, I didn't have copies of all on hand.) There are some things that don't hold up as well. Especially in the Song of the Lioness books, a lot of the scenes feel a bit disjointed, and it can be a bit all over the place. On the other hand, I did notice a lot of things that I really liked that would be a problem even in YA nowadays, such as Alanna having multiple sexual partners over the course of the series, and how she approaches it. You don't see that quite so much even now.

If they were favorites, nostalgia does help, though. I loved being able to re-read scenes I didn't remember all that well except for basics and that I thought it was awesome.

If you're reading critically, though, you're probably going to find more things that stick out. It depends on how you read them, I think.

The Circle ones were my favorites! I did not at all remember the multiple sexual partners thing, but that is indeed something you don't see as much in books today. (At least not portrayed in a fair light, which is dumb, but what can you do?)

And honestly, I don't read trying to be critical, but sometimes it happens regardless. You're probably right though, in that nostalgia would help; rarely have I decided I dislike something from my childhood, even if it wasn't as good as I remembered it.

I'll think about it!
