Re: Moar X-Files Talk (spoilers and such)

I'm really curious to hear your thoughts about Humbug (the sideshow episode). It's always been a favorite of mine - largely for the comedy (there's nothing I love more than Dr Blockhead's monologue at the end of the episode - "Imagine going through your whole life looking like that"). But I also thought it did fairly well at representing the sideshow characters in a fairly good, human way. IDK tho, curious about your perspective.

Also important production note on Humbug: according to X-Files legend, Gillian Anderson actually ate the roach in that one scene.

The end of season 2 definitely gets pretty weird - Humbug for all that I love it is definitely pretty out of the box and you just have a lot of kind of weird tonal choices. Stuff like Fearful Symmetry - which maybe doesn't quite work. But when it works it can be cool.

Fearful Symmetry was so fucking weird. Aliens impregnating animals for babies? REALLY? REALLY? They couldn't just kidnap animal babies from the wild? Did I not get the actual plot? Was it something other than aliens?

I think I started with Humbug thinking, "Oh great, they are going to be making fun of everyone" to "Oh wait, they are treating them like people!"

Plus it was really fun. The part where Jim Jim is talking about losing his hair and then the potato bit was hilarious. Conundrum at the end being, "It must have been something I ate" and driving off was great.

That may be the first X-Files episode where I actually laughed out loud.

Nope. That's the actual plot. You didn't miss anything. It really is that stupid.

Sometimes, when X-Files misses, it misses big.

There's so many hilarious bits in Humbug! The Jim Jim stuff is fantastic. Another great bit: "Why, looking at your all-American physique and serious demeanor, I could assume you're an office of the law. An FBI agent, say. But in doing so, I have reduced you to a cliche." "But I am an FBI agent."

Yeah, I think it's really clever about subverting those expectations in a really thorough way. Like, for instance, the way that "Can you imagine going through your whole life looking like that" is repeated throughout the episode, especially given what we know of how much of a complete weirdo is, really does that job effectively. And it is really funny (the writer of the episode was more of a comedy writer who just kind of fell into a job with the X-Files) (also, he was good friends with Duchovny and really loved giving him shit about stuff like how handsome he was)

So handsome.

I am done watching for the night, but it looks like I'll finish this season up tomorrow! Huzzah!
