Me, I'm in the middle. I'm fine with a DK able to get it up or not able to. My only gripe is with anyone who says "Every DK [can|can't] have sex" -- I think it varies even more than it varies for living folks.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 02:51 am (UTC)(link)I've always written thassarian and koltira as more "unable" than "unwilling" but I know people who have written scorching bone times and have def enjoyed some of those fics.

Let's not go into what my friend, who outright states that her Death Knight is a 2nd gen DK, not a 3rd gen, gets into anytime she RPs, because 2nd gen are still considered living. She's been rather agog, because people don't seem to have issues with taking a base race and playing something similar but different, like, oh, for example, taking a troll and playing it as a different group than the default, or a Tauren as a Grimtotem or the variant from Northrend. Before the Night Elves allowed for mages, people would play them as Highborne, and people didn't fuss about that for the most part. But dear gods do people take issue with a 2nd gen DK, and it's not like she's obnoxious about it. She doesn't mention it unless it gets brought up in RP or the RPer asks. And then, to quote Joker, everyone loses their fucking minds.
I'm sorta like, jeez. Okay. If it bothers you that much, then DON'T RP WITH THAT CHARACTER. Or even that RPer. It doesn't mean you need to be a fucking asshole about it.

I wish more people had that rule in RP. I'm open to ideas that might bother others (a rule for me is that I'm willing to RP with out-there, theme-challenging character so long as the RP is good), but if I encountered some idea even too wacky for me? I'd just wish the other person luck and move on.
I noticed the same odd thing your DK friend encountered: A belf raised by trolls? People are willing to go with that. A living DK? GET THE TORCHES!
Too bad about your Forsaken! She sounds like she would have been interesting to RP with. It's boggling that someone could claim "canonically possible" to that idea -- people (living or otherwise) are so different, you can't say there's just one canon RL human, so how could you say that there's just one way to canonically play a Forsaken?

I suppose... hmm. I think the best way to put it is that a lot of people in the RP community have built "rules" that SHALL NOT EVER BE CROSSED because they're often bad RP... instead of judging the RPer. I know a couple people who RP dragons who do so incredibly well and have deep, rounded characters with lots of interesting internal conflict and hooks for other people to pick up on and dig into. To me, that's good RP, even if the initial concept is a bit out there.
EXACTLY. It's weird, too, because people will cry "canon!" but then have their own characters that skirt canon or look at canon in an interesting and different way. And that's the thing for me; I like characters that approach canon that way. I've actually had the "speshul snoflayke" thing tossed at me for my Forsaken character, and I'm like... huh? She's a relatively normal character. She has her own feelings about her race and the politics involved and everything going on in the story, yeah, but most of what I have about her is personal, like her desire for sex and wanting to be a mother. I'm still trying to figure out how that's a speshul snoflayke. Sigh.
