You're probably not alone in that OP. I bet a lot of people forget when they haven't read something in awhile.

I want that edition. Gorgeous!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
OT, but this cover is beautiful. Good image pick, OP.

First image that came up on Google Image Search. It is a good cover, isn't it? I should pick up a hardcopy, one of these days.

I should reread that....

What do you think of the change from Weird Fiction to ... heck, I'm not even sure what I'd call the genre of the second half?

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'd have to reread it again to tell you indepth lol. From what I dimly recall, the way the book is set out (loosely-connected stories), it's pretty much a "go with me here" try by Chambers. A very good one, mind you. Considering the age of the book, it's definitely one of the classics everyone should read.

Or...not...since, y'know, the whole point of the book is that reading The King in Yellow drives one boogaloo.

I have movies like this. Doesn't matter how many times I watch them, I don't remember a thing about them after finishing.

Honestly this is me with most books. I sort of remember the general plot or atmosphere, but I'm always baffled b people who can quote stuff.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good thing, right? Since if you remembered it, you'd probably go crazy like everyone else who reads The King in Yellow.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
This is what I'm thinking. Unless what if I'm already insane from reading the book, and that's why I can't remember the book every time I reread it?

Not even Cassilda's Song?

Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies,
But stranger still is
Lost Carcosa.

Aside from that, though, the only one of the stories that I clearly remember is "The Mask", for the pool that turns people to marble. I have a dim recollection of another one where a man in a church is stalked by the king himself. Huh. I should reread.

Cassilda and the marble pool are the ones I remember dimly too. :P

Rarely do I forget something entirely, but it isn't unusual for me to only vaguely remember something I read/played/watched years ago. Or even if I feel like I remember it pretty well, I might forget important details.

At least it gives me an excuse to rewatch/replay/reread things? And in your situation you get to experience the book for the first time every time! (Almost, anyway, lol.) That's kind of cool?

I almost wish I could forget certain big 'reveals' so I could experience them fresh, but that kind of thing typically stays with me.

That's the best kind of book, assuming you enjoyed it. You can re-read over and over!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it not memorable or do you just not retain information well or...?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
da

it's pretty amazing, it's just very... confusing? except not really

it's just a very, very weird book

it's so weird you just go with it, and every other page it's like BAM MORE WEIRDNESS and it's non-stop... so in the end you're just exhausted and unable to process anything

You're not the only one, anon. With some books I've read, I forget so much of them when I re-read them it's almost like reading a new book, heh.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this book! And I kinda have the same problem with it... I remember certain passages but not entire stories. Kinda like with Alice in Wonderland (for me at least). Like I can give you a general summary, but can't remember when x happens and what follows after y.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, now I want to read this book. Which might have been why you made the secret? I'd never heard of it until now.

Every Diana Wynne Jones book is this to me.

(I love TKiY but haven't reread it in years, btw. Thanks for the prompt.)
