I get you, OP. I understand enough to play simple games, but th extent to what Hikaru and Sai were talking about, yeah, not so much. I don't have the patience to learn all the terms, too.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want to get the basics use a 5x5 (and later a 9x9) board and focus more in the basic premise of the game (not letting you pieces being captured + capture territory) instead of the terms.

At least that's how I finally learned.

I doubt I'd be able to learn either, tbh. I never even learned Chess...

This secret made me laugh though, so thanks for that! (You lie your ass off, OP!)

Still want to read this in its entirety, too.

the rules of chess are easy as heck though. if you can play candy crush, you can play chess.

all you have to remember is the movement of 6 pieces, plus maybe 4 rules to learn the game.

sorry, I'm probably projecting because one of my friends is so stubborn about not being able to learn it... she can remember the rules of complex board games whose rules take 1h to read out, but once she thinks she can't do something she won't even try

... I hate to admit this but I've never played Candy Crush. Never had much desire to, and when I heard how addictive it was for some people I figured it was for the best I didn't start, lol.

However, I'm not against learning chess! It never really came up tbh, and I never went out of my way to learn. I don't think I'm incapable (Especially if there aren't all that many rules) or anything, so it's not a case of being convinced I'm bad at it, just one of inexperience.

Maybe I should buy a cheap set and give it a shot?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I was giving it as example because Candy Crush is supposedly easy :P but yeah, it's nice to hear that you're principally open to playing it. even though it really shouldn't be my business.

many pcs also have a chess game installed, if you want to give it a try

I don't think mine does, but there might be one available for download for free. I might check that out, actually. Or maybe I could find one on my phone...

Wouldn't have thought of that, thanks!

I learned Go from a booklet in the box after I bought my first Go board.

It took me a day of confusion, reading the book and thinking about it, to get it. It's kind of like, there's this ancient game underneath it, and the Japanese rules are logical derivatives of it?

I guess I can play it now, but I still am no good at the game.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
If you still want to learn the bases, you can try this: http://playgo.to/iwtg/en/
It's an interactive site that explains the bases step by step.
There also is, I think it was GBA?, Hikaru no Go games that you can emulate that are supposedly good at teaching the basics. They start you with small boards and gradually introduce bigger chalenges. I never actually played them though.
(But yay, Hikago secret!)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

Thanks for the advice! Maybe I'll give it a shot, though I'm not sure I actually have the patience. I did see the Hikaru no Go GBA game when I lived in Japan, is it an actual Go game? That's so cute.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I learned by getting a "how to play go" book and finding some software that let me play against the computer. 5x5 or 9x9 boards are good for just seeing how basic patterns and strategies function. I'll be trashed the day I ever play against a human, but I've at least grasped the logic of the game. I'm sad to say that I honestly get why they're all so obsessed with it *g*

It's cute that this secret is number 5 ("go" in Japanese).

...and that the series uses the number "5" every opportunity it gets.

Omg a HnG secret! <3
I'm the same as you, OP. I don't think I'll ever know how to play.

And I just wanted to say that this is one of the best manga out there.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here!!!

And I totally agree, the manga (and anime!) is one of the best ever. It's not my usual genre (which tends to involve explosions and/or magic) but it's just so good. It needs a little patience, but I just remember nearing the end of the anime and realizing how Hikaru was drawn to gradually grow and look more mature, and if you compare the end series Hikaru to the one from the first episode the physical difference is so obvious. To me, that's really what it was about - Hikaru growing, not just as a Go player, but as a person, and it just felt like something special beyond any normal anime or manga. Love it.

Still can't play Go though. :(

A Hikaru No Go secret!! :D I love this anime, despite not really knowing how to play Go. It's an excellent show/manga.

The ending was so unsatisfying though!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I tell everyone that HnG is not a story about a game. It's a story about loving something so much you want to become an expert at it, even if you have to take the longest hardest roads to get there.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get the game either; still enjoyed the manga
now I'm reading Ookiku Furikabutte, a series about baseball - I don't know the rules of that sport either...
