I'm a bit like this when it comes to impractical/useless armour in general. I mean, I'm aware that it's often probably sexist when it happens to female characters, but I'm mostly pissed off about armour that looks like no armour ever would look/leaves all vulnerable parts of the body wide open and unprotected - no matter which gender wears it. I was raging all through Final Fantasy XII for that very reason - even the gus who have some sort of armour manage to have a damn cutout RIGHT OVER THE FUCKING HEART what the hell.

This is how I feel. Unless your character is impervious to attacks or has healing powers or something, their armor should actually cover them.

Right? Impractical armour - I hate it so much. Boob-plates, for example, mostly annoy the hell out of me not because "boobs on armour are sexist" but because having boobs on armour will probably kill you faster instead of providing protection. And logically chosen armour in fantasy as well: Fully metal clad knights going up against fire breathing dragons - I mean, it sounds like a great way to end up as a can of corned beef but otherwise... sounds like a bad idea?

Thissss. Well, first I'd agree with OP, no one needs to be having adventures, let alone battling, in high heels. Maybe a little wedge heel if the character is really desperate, but anything more than that, no.

But yeah, impractical armor annoys the crap out of me. Unless it's mage armor that can arguably be "enchanted" (and usually mage armor is cloth with crap defensive stats anyway). And even then, if I were out running in the woods, I would want most of me covered. Think of all the insect bites, or the scratch plants!

I have weird standards about that. I'm willing to put up with a whole lot of impracticality if it manages to ping my 'cool' emotion. For example, random zippers and straps everywhere generally do it for me, so I don't care if the outfit is kind of dumb (I liked Lulu's outfit from FF, for example. Such bullshit. It was great), or say a character with random oversized metal kneepads and no other armor, idk.

But somethings just inherently strike me as uncool. Heels are one of them, corsets are another. Maybe because I read both of those as being inherently limiting and stifling (and maybe because I have more experience with trying to wear those every day than with some of the more outlandish outfits people try to put characters in).

Sometimes I'm willing to accept randomly impractical armor, but I do prefer if it has at least /some/ protective value, and if it's not blatant fanservicey pandering.
A cutout over the heart would drive me crazy too, though (unless, idk, complicated symbolism? Maybe?)

After reading four pages on the BSN about boob armour and the relative merits of Dragon Age armour in general, I think I agree with your stance. (That discussion brought up examples of how DA is not ideal in armour, but even the most egregious example of boob plate didn't have a boob window.)

This is why I love the armour in Dragon Age, particularly the heavy to massive armour. It damn well covers women up!
