Favorite Gen Tropes and/or Storylines

What are your favorite types of gen stories? What would you like to see more of?

I love fics that explore family relationships. And I'd like to see more of those, particularly in the Tolkien fandom. Parent/child, sibling, even aunt/uncle and niece/nephew. I want it all.

+1
I'd love to write more family fics in Tolkien but I can never think of a story. I'd especially like child/parent but most writing sites that give ideas are all set in modern day.

Me too. I'd really love to say write about the Finweans in Valinor, but I wouldn't know where to begin.

I'd say start with Míriel's condition, through her death, and Fëanor's reaction and the development of the gulf between him and Finwë's family with Indis.

I find the idea of that all the more interesting when, using "The Shibboleth of Fëanor" as context, you look at just how old Fëanor is compared to Finwë's second marriage. According TSoF, Fëanor was an adult when his mother died.

Also? I think Maedhros's fathername is an indicator that he was born before Fingolfin. Maedhros was Nelyafinwë - "Third Finwë". That opens up a possible chance that Fëanor took some glee being able to call his son that while Indis was not about to call hers.

It is more that I don't think my writing skills are up to the challenge. The only thing I really write well are porny fics or short fluff pieces. I've never been good at writing plotty things.

Episode sequels, case/adventure/story fics, IC in-universe fics, basically more of the same as canon. Some fix-it fics, but I tend to be picky, and haven't found many that have "worked" for me.

Anything where the "big"/"strong" character is the one that's hurt/whumped (Steve) and it's not all about someone else's (usually Tony's) feelings. :I

Fic that explores more of canon, especially obscure characters and events. Just exploring general worldbuilding opportunities. Maybe a good what-if type story (though it would have to be well written and fairly consistent with canon). And family dynamics.

Horror. Murder mysteries. Especially those two genres in scifi universes.

Not fic-related but have you read the Whatdunnit books?

No, not heard of them before. Who are they by?

Anthology series. Used to be edited by Mike Resnick.

ISTR there was a second book, but I can't find it now.

Murder Mystery AU! Mysteries are my favorite type of stories, I just want a good, engaging plot.

De-aging. Kid fics. When characters meet an alternative timeline of themselves. Like Steve meet Winter Soldier!Steve.

- in canon or canon divergent fic

- episode tags

- friendship or family fic - fluff or introspection, not so hot on angst unless it's an episode tag or supplementary in-canon fic

- fix-its

- alternative canon pov fic

Whatever the parent property is about, that is what I like my fanfic to be about too. Which means mostly it is adventure of the week stuff.

I like team bonding or family binding fic, those always make me smile.

And I love body swap fic in general so I'd read that as GEN fic too.

I like reading fix it fics or uas (universe alterations). I'd love to read more humor tropes in fics.

I was just reading a long, adventure-type fic and realized how much I miss them. So yeah, that. Also, I adore good horror fic (especially psychological horror), canon divergence stuff, stories exploring family dynamics, deaging fic...

Basically, I wish there were more gen.
