Re: What injuries have you had?
(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)I was just asking because I have a character who had an old heavy TV (and other stuff) fall on him and he hurts his ankle. I wasn't sure if it should be made a sprain or a break, what the other characters would see (in like the first 15-30 minutes), how much he could more around, what kind of recovery at the hospital - just the general logistics I had to work around. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you don't mind.
Re: What injuries have you had?
The bruising would still be pretty painful and you'd have swelling and maybe lose some mobility in the joint until that went away, maybe even some nerve damage. Your biggest risks in that situation would be compartment syndrome, which I've thankfully never had, and rhabdomyolysis, which I did have once apparently but it didn't feel like anything and my blood detoxified itself or something. Idk. Both of those can kill you, though.
A clean break probably wouldn't require surgery. If it's in the right position to heal itself, then it's just a case of immobilising it. When I broke my foot, I was given a choice of a cast or a splint. I chose cast because they wanted me to keep the splint on for longer. They usually wait to see how much swelling you're going to have before they mummify you, so you don't get your circulation cut off if they make it too small. It would probably be a boot cast like I had, which is up to the knee, keeping the foot at 90 degrees. Fiberglass casts are the best invention ever. You can be really rough on them and get them wet and they're still good. I've had plaster before and they tend to go sort of gummy and nasty looking around the edges and where you sweat on them most. Splints can either be really comfy and supportive or really annoying and useless.
I am not a doctor and these are just my personal experiences.
