My current OTP has two characters who both have tragic pasts yet since Character A's is considered the "more tragic" past, Character B's tragic past is often erased in fics (literally, especially if it's an AU) so that 75% of the fic can be devoted to Character A wangsting over their issues. Yeah, I'm pretty sick of tragic backstories too at this point.

This is true of many fandom pairings, that one of the characters is cast in the support role even when they have issues of their own. It's just bad writing, mostly.
