Where are so many commenters getting the idea that the secret is saying that you should wade through FF.net for fics.

To me it seems like the secret is saying that not reading a fic recced or mentioned to you just because of where it is is kind of ridiculous.

Yeah, that's what I thought, and I 100% agree with the OP. Refusing a rec because it's ~posted on ff.net~ is completely ridiculous.

Not really. ff.net is a horrible platform with some seriously annoying design and functionality issues. Assuming a fic is shit because it's hosted there is stupid, but not wanting to read something on ff.net (rather than mirrored elsewhere) isn't.

I don't think anybody was talking about preferring to read something mirrored on whatever site is more convenient.
I prefer ao3 mirrors over tumblr. It's the people making quality calls about fics based on where they're posted that is the silly thing, imo.

Yeah, I rarely ever look at the listings on FFN, and for some fandoms, I avoid them totally. However I still go there because it's the biggest archive and I hope to dig up the proverbial gem out of the pile of crap.
