I see your point, and of course I wouldn't tell a friend "oh, you posted at ff.n? I'm not going to read it! Pssh!"

But when you try finding a Harry Potter fic and the first page contains summaries like these, I tend to stop wasting my time:

"HARRY LOVES DRACO BUT DRACOS DYEING SONGFIC 2 EVANECE'S MEMOREEZ BE NICE ITS MY FIRST FIC."

(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're specifically referring to people who say that if they see a fic on AO3 or something that mentions being crossposted on FF, they will refuse to read it

As to the question of whether anyone actually thinks this, or if it's just something trolls say to troll, I have no idea

Oh for fuck's sake. Nobody is saying you have to read every fic that's posted on FF.net. Or even on the first page. I don't even read fic much unless it's recced to me or I have reason to believe it's good.

It's just saying that the attitude of "ew it's on ff.net? It must be bad, because a lot of fic there is bad" is kind of stupid.

If you're not going to use the search and filter, then of course your results are going to be terrible. Why is that FFnet's fault rather than your responsibility?

Another reason people usually don't like fanfic.net, is because roughly half of it or so are really blatant OC self-insert fics. Which most people don't want to read.

I don't think ff.net is particularly bad for fic. It is certainly better than AO3 which seems to consist almost solely of fics which were written merely to accumulate as many tags as possible. I would read fics on AO3, but I wouldn't go there looking myself. I'd let someone else wade through the slush pile and go off their recs. FF.net I have a reasonable expectation of finding a fic there myself.

I agree that a good fic could be posted anywhere. However, I don't like FF because I hate not being able to highlight as I read (or copy/paste a story into a doc) and I hate downloading extensions. So, it's not enjoyable to read on FF.

Generally speaking, posting to ffnet is a nightmare. I absolutely hate formatting to crosspost there and feel skeevy posting adult content when the majority of what's posted reads like it was written by kids.

The reason I won't read anything on ffnet is because I can't find anything without scouring rec lists for things I might enjoy with decent writing. I mean, if someone I trust links me to it that's fine but wading in on my own seems like a waste of time.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Where are so many commenters getting the idea that the secret is saying that you should wade through FF.net for fics.

To me it seems like the secret is saying that not reading a fic recced or mentioned to you just because of where it is is kind of ridiculous.

I find myself refusing to read any fic posted on AO3, especially if it has over 4 kudos or 4 bookmarks. I feel shitty enough as is.

The only times I've ever gone near FFN in my over 10 years in fandom have been for recs to specific stories that sounded enticing enough to look at and I can't find it elsewhere. Probably amounts to no more than a dozen times total in all these years.

I'm very happy arbitrarily ignoring FFN entirely. I also don't read stories at AO3 that mention crossposting to FFN. Right or wrong, I take that as a sign of poorer quality and am fine with my personal scale of judgement.

And I've never run into the problem of a friend posting there because, if any of them did, they also posted to an archive or personal website. Mostly, I'm pretty sure most of my friends also ignored FFN back before the AO3 arrived. FFN never came up in discussions of fic or rec lists in my fandoms, etc, back in the day.

One thing is that I'm a slash-only reader. FFN seemed to be more over to the gen and het side of things, though that's my outsider view, of course.

If someone recs me a fic posted on ff.net I have absolutely no problem reading it. Like you say, a good fic is a good fic no matter where it's posted and I've seen some fantastic fic posted to ff.net over the years.

But I'd rather read fic on AO3 because I'm used to the look of the site, have an account now (so I can easily comment, favorite, etc) and like the ability to download the fic (even if I rarely remember to, even when I love something).

That, and, yes...there tend to be more fic pairing canon characters with OC's on ff.net, in just about every fandom I've explored. I suppose it would be easy enough to filter out, but I'd rather not have to; I prefer seeing everything in case I miss something I might like while looking for a specific pairing. (In smaller fandoms this works well, in larger ones...not always so much.)

I do feel where you're coming from though and IA, I just don't go there on my own anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I avoid fic at ffnet not because of the quality but because ffnet makes it harder for reader not allowing to download fic.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh as a fanfic writer I don't really give a damn if someone chooses not to read my fic because whatever reason.

Don't like anything on FF.net? Avoid it all you want. You do you, even if I don't agree.

What gets on my nerves? When people feel the need to obnoxiously tell me "ewww I don't read that kind of fic." and be a dick to me about it. "all fic on that site/ that kind of fic is shit" and stuff like that.

Don't be a jerk about it, kay?

If I've been recced a fic I'll read it no matter where it's been posted, hell for some of my older fandoms there isn't really anything on Ao3 so I have to go looking through ff.net for anything(and honestly the ratio of fic I will read/fic I wont read is about the same on both sites, it's just the types of fic I wont touch are different for each site).

Reading through a lot of the replies to this, I find I'm feeling odd that I don't have any sort of preference or strong opinion regarding reading fic on FFN or AO3, and never really have (apart from during the days of the first purge, when the NC-17 rating on FFN was removed. But, well, AO3 wasn't around back then).

I'll read fic anywhere it's posted, and I'll happily search for fic on both sites. I wonder if this might partially be due to the fact that I'm not invested in any of the mega-fandoms; it's easy for me to wade through crap, but there's comparatively little of it.

In any case, I agree with you, OP, that it's silly to refuse to read a rec'd fic due to either being solely on FFN or it being crossposted there. I'd think that attitude was silly regardless of the archive in question.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, yes and no. I don't think ff.net has the monopoly on bad fics or anything, but I loathe the formatting changes and usually find those fics difficult to read. If I could easily copy a fic into a word document and read it there, sure, but otherwise? I'll probably not waste the time trying, no matter how good the fic is.

Yeah... It's a ridiculous stance to take. FFN is bloody huge and going by Sturgeon's Law, that means there has got to be at least a decent proportion of reasonably readable fic there.

For example: The fic that I feel in love with, became friends with the writer and now RP plots loosely based on her fic? I originally found that fic on FFN, while amuse at the idea that there is a crossover section for LotR and The Silmarillion (seriously, they're the same canon).

There's also a fact that some fandoms (especially older ones) have a better supply of fic on FFN than on AO3. I feel Harry Potter and some of the older animes in particular are in that position, likely because the days they were really big was before AO3 existed.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
That's too bad. There is a ton of amazing fic on there. A03 is too sparse for my tastes most of the time, but that's probably because I like older or more unusual pairings so finding fic for those is tough in general. Ff.net is an older site and it shows but I don't want it to disappear anytime soon.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I started out on FFnet 14 years ago, took up Ao3 when it came out, and generally post both places (extremely lemony pieces are Ao3 only).

I have to laugh a little about the comments on how "hard" FFnet is to use: for my money, if you want a really obnoxious searching/posting/formatting/reading experience, just try AFF. (MediaMiner wasn't too great either.)

Any time a fic has been recced to me on ff.net, it turns out to be terrible, even if it's by writers who I've previously enjoyed when they post elsewhere. I've honestly never read a single good fic on ff.net.

On the other hand, my hit rate for fics recced on AO3 or LJ is about 1 in 10, which are decent odds.

Add to that the awkwardness of reading on ff.net because of it setting off my virus warnings several times and the inability to download fic quickly and leave, and I will no longer read any fics on ff.net.

If I even see fic has been crossposted there, it leaves a bad impression and I'm less likely to read the fic. It's not some kind of snobbery, it's just logic derived from past bad associations.

My most reliable method for finding good fic on ffnet in general is to start from off-site fic recs and comb through them until I find an author that writes well (good grammar/spelling, not reeking of teen drama, shares some of my fandoms) and then use their faves list as a jumping off point. It's not a foolproof method, but sometimes you can hit a goldmine of amazing fic/authors.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The pain in the ass with ff.net is that it's frustratingly difficult to get a multi-chapter fic on to an e-reader. Like, sure this 60K fic looks totally interesting, but you can't even open every chapter in tabs and Dotepub them into a single document anymore.

To each their own, OP. From personal experience, I know that most fic on ff.net is crap. So I prefer to stay away from ff.net just because of the likelihood that the rec is crap.
