26. It also has the most hits of any of my fics.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this is the one fic I've written that's rated Explicit (and is mostly from the POV of a character who has a fuckton of fangirls, even though it doesn't actually feature the character in question getting it on).

Do you think explicit stuff gets more hits? I don't know. Admittedly, my stuff is all for fairly small pairings (and fics for one pairing definitely get more hits than fics for the other pairing). But I always figured that I'd get more hits if I tried writing other things rather than just porn for a change.

In some fandoms, yes. Especially explicit fic that hits a lot of that fandom's popular tropes or features popular characters.

Depends on the fandom, but in my fandoms smut and fluff are the great crowd pleasers, especially if you hit one of the popular pairings.

NAYRT - I'm torn. On one hand I think the grass is always greener and all that. On the other, I do think a lot of people are into fanfic just for explicit things. Comments here (along the lines of "wait people write fic for things other than porn?") have affirmed this belief. Fanfic being for exploring fictional universes is more the exception than the norm nowadays.

But just because it's explicit doesn't mean it's a pairing people want to read.

Maybe you are right. My corner of the fandom is pretty niche and while the fandom for my pairings is very active on Tumblr, that probably doesn't translate into an active fandom on AO3. Some of the best writers for the pairing get hundreds of kudos, but I'm pretty new to writing them.
