(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)it's literally classified as a disease. a disease does not necessarily have to kill or physically harm someone, but vitiligo can certainly be argued to be psychologically harmful to the people who have it. a lot of people with it pay a shit ton of money for treatments (or use homemade treatments that are sometimes potentially dangerous) to try to lessen the appearance of their vitiligo because it takes a serious toll on their self-esteem.

Think of how many characters are drawn with eyes of two colours because it looks hella cool. I think vitiligo is better understood now so it crops up as an interesting quirk people imagine when humanising non-human characters, especially when the non-human character design has unusual markings of some kind.
