Parts of tumblr has that (accidentally racist) thing where they believe that Japanese people all want to be white because all those anime characters are white. They don't get that anime characters usually register as Japanese with Japanese viewers unless stated otherwise in canon.

Also: Pretty sure tumblr wouldn't give a shit about vitiligo if there hadn't been that one successful model.

lol that pisses me off too, "Japanese people want to be white, look at Sailor Moon with her blonde hair and blue eyes!" ... okay what race do they want to be when their characters are pink-haired with purple eyes exactly...?

na Lol, good point. Though many Japanese (and other Asian) people want to be as pale-skinned as possible, it's not the same as wanting to be Caucasian.

Being pale is a class/wealth thing rather than a race thing.

This. Being pale has been a symbol of class/wealth in many cultures because it meant that you were rich enough that you didn't have to work outdoors. It had nothing to do with the skin color itself and everything to do with the fact that it was a sign you weren't constantly exposed to the sun like most workers were.

ayrt Yes, which is why you'll sometimes see Thai construction workers clad head to toe inc face in coverings despite the heat to keep the sun off to keep their skin pale, it's aspirational. Or people on bikes with one hand awkwardly on an umbrella in full sun. Though (and I know more about Thailand), being pale is more like being Chinese, which is linked to class/wealth. And in fact in the West, being more white is linked to class/wealth too, you can't exactly separate it out. Plus, aren't the northern island Japanese darker skinned as they're a different race, and that's looked down upon, so you definitely don't want to be mistaken for those?

Oh and also pale skin is a youth thing in many cultures in Asia too, though less urban, because if you're working outside all your life, you get darker and darker.

Exactly. As someone of Japanese ancestry, it really creeps me out whenever I read responses from people who think this way. Perspective can be scary.
