This is becoming a big thing in anime fandoms? The only one I've seen it in is Attack on Titan, and those characters are fake German, not Japanese.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
not OP and not anime but I've seen this happen a lot with Maya Fey in Ace Attorney

Canon Maya: http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/aceattorney/images/5/5d/Gs2_05.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100505172157

Cute drawings but not even remotely close to what she looks like.

Not sure how it is in the other fandoms but in the Ace Attorney fandom it's characters like Maya, Phoenix, and Trucy, who are typically headcanoned in fandom as full or mixed-race Asians, who get this treatment. Never Edgeworth or Francizka. Those two, typically headcanoned as white, still get to keep their regular skin tones no matter who draws them but the "Asian" characters get 'racebent-but-not-really'.

It's kind of particularly annoying to me since Maya and I have almost exactly the same figure (tiny, 5ft, medium-pale, flat chested, thin Asian girl) but somehow tumblr fans still felt the need to make her seem "more ethnic" for sjw points.
Like, there's the implication that people like me aren't "WOC" enough or something. Cool.

... fetishization of vitiligo?

Do you mean they act like it makes a person more awesome/more oppressed/more "real" or is it sexual fetishization, like "vitiligo is hottt!?"

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
either way.... yikes.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't really notice it until OP mentioned it, but yeah I've actually seen a weird amount of people racebend characters and give them vitiligo (or draw OCs who have it). no idea why. I'm not sure if all of them are necessarily fetishizing it but it's kind of weird now that I think about it

I just let people draw what they want and don't nitpick and scrutinize over wether they're being "too sjw" or whatever. Because frankly it's stupid.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
People go fucking apeshit over people drawing Korra "too pale", or how omg abloobloobloo everybody in One Piece is suddenly the same shade of beige.

*rolls eyes*

It's like SJW orthodoxy has been taking over fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I've seen some crazies out there that start raging over it. Honestly, people should just draw what they want to draw and be happy doing that.

Hello and welcome to tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen this on Attack on Titan fandom, in which Eren is always colored with a darker skin palette than his canon skin color. Same goes for Marco as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Eren and Marco aren't japanese though...?

OP here, that's one of the fandoms I chose not to mention because I guess they're pretty racially ambiguous in canon iirc?

I'm interested in canons that have been shifted to a different cultural setting. For example, when Tangled came out, an artist drew her interpretations of the story set in India, so the characters were obviously Indian but the narrative remained the same. I find it really interesting to see narratives interpreted through different cultural lenses and how a lot of behaviours and actions could be different depending on the society. I think this might be a bit different from what you're talking about, OP, which is racebending a character and how that would affect them within the same narrative? I think that's also an interesting thing to explore and I'd love to discuss it!

Most of the racebending wank I see focuses on skintone rather than other external factors that would affect the character.

On the other hand I get uncomfortable drawing people who are not white because some people acts like I'm doing it for brownie points when no... I just wanted to explore character designs or cultures or my perspective of a character. There's weirdos jumping to conclusions on either side, let them draw and interpret however.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
There's a part of fandom that likes to picture Sherlock as a fish living in Watson's bathtub. Changing skintones for the hell of it seems pretty tame in comparison.

Glad I'm not the only one who's creeped out by tumblr's new thing for vitiligo. It comes across as either fetishizing or trying to make dark skin more "interesting" (because of course a character with fully dark skin would be too boring!).

Yeah, it's been a tumblr trend for a while now. I've seen some where they specified in the comments "but what if x character was x race", but there's others where the character is the same, just with 50 shades of darker skin. Anyway, I stopped questioning tumblr on this stuff and just take it as another tumblr "thing".

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Parts of tumblr has that (accidentally racist) thing where they believe that Japanese people all want to be white because all those anime characters are white. They don't get that anime characters usually register as Japanese with Japanese viewers unless stated otherwise in canon.

Also: Pretty sure tumblr wouldn't give a shit about vitiligo if there hadn't been that one successful model.

"This Japanese character made by Japanese people for a Japanese viewership is not Japanese enough!!!! I, a (usually white) not Japanese person, must fix this!!!"

They've started doing this to Tolkien's characters of all people, who are not only meant to parallel north-western European mythical heroes but even got their phyisical attributes mentioned by the writer himself. I understand racebending for fun, but claiming you are right and the writer is wrong for not including REPRESENTASHUN when he had no intention for doing that in the first place is stupid. There was even this effort going around to change the wiki pictures because they weren't 'accurate'.

Well, some people do it because they see themselves as dark skinned and crave a little more representation. I like different interpretations too, of course there are some people who are a little fanatical about it and they'll start going on insane rants about authors from other countries being racist because they don't draw characters to look the way THEY would prefer.

Basically it's great in of itself but some people just take it way too far.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
More than often I see great art, but these things are putting me off from even sharing them. No, not the fact that the characters have dark skin, but how they're just recolors of a fair skinned character.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's late and I don't expect anyone to answer this, but this secret reminded me: why is it that in a lot of hentai/porny doujunshi, the (OC) male characters are drawn with MUCH darker skin than the pasty white female participants?

(though this is not always the case, I normally see this when the girls seem a little... less than willing to participate...)

The only anime fanart I see regularly these days is One Piece, and the only character I can think of that is regularly coloured significantly darker than canon is Vivi. I'm kind of with them on that one, though, given that she's supposed to be from that world's equivalent of Egypt.

I don't really count when people darken Zoro, Usopp or Robin, because the anime did it for years before they decided to just make everyone the same colour.
