Actually, it's エアリス.

Out of curiousity, because FFVII wasn't one I ever played, did they officially romanize it as one or the other?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Aerith http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/tony_3ji/33654368.html (official Japanese merchandise)

Haha. Then why is there so much crazy (and I have seen extreme levels of crazy even as someone outside that sphere) about the Aeris/Aerith debate?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
In the actual Final Fantasy VII game, which has been around nearly 20 years, she is Aeris. When you've played and grown attached to the game, and suddenly they try to switch it on you with later spin-offs and whatnot, most people don't like to suddenly change how they think of her.

I could understand that logic if they'd given her a different name (nothing bugs me more than games or movies of any language where the English version gets 'English' names because... whatever reason they change them for), but it's still the same name in essence, especially to create the kind of vitriol I've seen when someone spells it "wrong".

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
part of it is also the argument that Aerith sounds like Aeris with a lisp so it sounds funny to people. I grew up with Aeris and just mentally stick with that given how the brain processes reading.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I hate to agree cause I personally prefer Aeris and still call her that, it's right there in English in the Japanese manual (Aerith), spelled correctly along with everyone else's names.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
The Japanese manual... wasn't released with the English game though. And if we're going to be fair, official Japanese materials used Barett and Ballet for Barret, and Midgal for Midgar. Official Japanese materials then were not consistent at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Is there any Japanese material where her name is 'Aeris'?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
That infamous music box comes to mind. The one that costs like a billion dollars. It's labeled as "Aeris's Theme".

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It was officially Aeris in Final Fantasy VII, in every English version. They also used Aeris for Final Fantasy Tactics, and the first wave of merchandise and the official website used Aeris.

I think Kingdom Hearts 1 was the first to switch over to Aerith. Now all official references to her are Aerith, including on the websites. But the re-releases of Final Fantasy VII still use Aeris.
comma_chameleon: (Why?!)

[personal profile] comma_chameleon 2015-08-11 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder why the switch? But it's weird that they'd basically retcon a romanization. (Personally I think Aeris looks prettier, but it wouldn't bother me either way).

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
エアリス was, apparently, supposed to directly come from the word "earth". Which I think is really stupid in a way-too-obvious sort of way. I agree, Aeris sounds much prettier (and it also has the Latin meaning for breath/air, which suits her, imo)... plus, it's just how I grew up knowing her.

I think it'd be cool if the remake gave you an option to choose either Aeris or Aerith, for the sake of original fans.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
da

back when the original translators didn't know how to correctly translate the name, it was Aeris
and I guess it was official? at least my game has Aeris instead of Aerith, and I bought my copy in 2001

but by the time the first Kingdom Hearts game came out, the name became officially Aerith because it's the correct way to spell it

so nowadays old fans refer to Aeris when they're talking about FFVII specifically, and Aerith when it comes to everything else (the KH franchise, the animated movie, etc) as though Aeris and Aerith are the same character in different universes

I'm guessing, since the remake will have a different plot (aka different universe), people will refer to her as Aerith

lol sorry for the essay

Haha it's okay, I like info so essays are good. :)

XD I think that'd confuse me though, different 'incarnations' of the same person and just spelling it slightly differently.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
lol

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly thought she was named after the constellation.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
>Japanese concept art and all promotional material, and subsequent English translated games have Aerith
>the English translation of the original game is correct!

I don't even.
