I think the cast looks awesome but I haven't seen any trailers (nor do I really have a lot F4 history knowledge) so the only thing that had me scratching my head was I thought Sue and Johnny were brother and sister, so why isn't Sue black as well? (Unless they made them adopted or their parents are one white/one black and then it'd work, just wondering if it gets mentioned at all.)

She's adopted. They don't do much with it..

Sue's adopted. But I've been wondering that too - why not make Sue black as well?

They may have did more with it in the Trank cut, before the studio stepped in to try and salvage something from the mess.

I'm pretty sure they just cast the actors they wanted without giving a shit about anything else.

So, the reason not to make Sue black is "because they wanted Kate Mara to play the role".

A relic from the Chronicle 2 script, which you can find online, that did not require anyone be related.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What is Chronicle 2?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The first draft of Fantastic 4.

Look Trank did an indie movie about a bunch of kids who found they had super powers called Chronicle and it was a mild success. He started writing a script for Chronicle 2, which would have a second small group of kids developing super powers, on the assumption he'd get it greenlighted no questions asked and a bigger budget, but no one was really interested. So he did the natural thing, he shelved the script and got on with his career which at that time was journeyman director who did what the studios wanted....hahahahaha, nah not really.

He started hitting up all the studios for a movie slot that he could glom his vanity script onto and after getting knocked back a few times he happened on Fox and Fantastic Four, Fox signed off on the vague hot new director with awesome group with superpowers idea and Trank set about grafting as much as the Chronicle 2 movie (which was to be found footage) onto FF script as he could. Eventually Fox did a set check and found out what he was doing and (along with his on and off set personal misbehavior) that caused them to throw a shit fit and order a massive round of reshoots (to the point that with less than two weeks to release the cast hadn't seen a final cut, and they had to abandon a 3D conversion essential for the Chinese market) to try and get it looking enough like the FF to keep the rights. Trank's Chronicle 2:Fantastic Four was supposedly far enough from the Fantastic Four concept it could have triggered a rights battle.

So what Corman did on purpose Josh Trank did by accident?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
......O_O. Wow. I did not know about any of that. Explains a lot though.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that the only reason Michael B. Jordon got the role? Because he was Trank's friend.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
That is the rumor. I think Jordan has started dissociating himself from Trank now though, for the sake of his career if nothing else. Trank is gonna struggle even getting midweek telemovie gigs now. He might not even get beer commercials or workout DVDs.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe, but he was actually good with the crap he was given. I hope Jordan starts to disassociate himself from Trank's work, TBH.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe so, but that doesn't diminish that Jordan's still an amazingly talented actor.

I'm about as far from a SJW as it's possible to be, but going to great lengths to make the immature rule-breaking hothead a black guy while his perfect straight A sister (who gets a romance with the lead white guy) is lily white rubbed me the wrong way. Since the adoption wasn't even a plot point, Sue should have been black too.

Really though, if they were going to racebend a character, Reed is the obvious choice. That could have opened up some interesting discussions about POC in the science fields.
