Nah, they're too busy setting up and operating male domestic abuse shelters like http://www.menandfamilies.org/

Re: A theory

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
lol @ you thinking MRAs actually give a shit about abuse survivors

Not thinking, knowing and stating.

Wait. Okay, I usually don't give a shit about getting into these arguments. But why else would someone set up a domestic abuse shelter unless they care about abuse survivors?

To hide the fact that they just want to shut down feminism.

Anon, is this you?

Re: A theory

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that kind of begs the obvious question of to what extent that kind of thing is characteristic of individual MRAs and the MRA as a movement

Fuck off ass-hole. This is not a place you should feel welcome.

As far as I can tell they're using it as a defense of MRAs, not a criticism

...I don't know if you're saying MRA's are great because they set up male DV shelters, or if you're saying MRA's are horrible because they set up male DV shelters.

Either one makes you an idiot.

Re: A theory

I think it makes them less black and white then OP will have you think

Re: A theory

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmmm, my partner's a family lawyer and found the number of men crying "domestic abuse" and getting a counter-intervention order after their wife/gf took out an intervention order against them for BEATING ON THEM, makes me not be inclined to give most "she abused meeeeee I need shelter" claims the benefit of the doubt. Also, two women a week are killed by their male partners in Australia. The reverse is almost never true.

Sure, there might have been a couple of guys once or twice who needed help, so yay.

* Almost never true except in self defense...

So you think it's skeptical that there are relationships where both partners are violent?

That seems unlikely to me.

It is pretty likely that both partners are violent. I just googled around a bit.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1854883/
http://pb.rcpsych.org/content/35/1/33.1

"Almost 24% of all relationships had some violence, and half (49.7%) of those were reciprocally violent."

That's weird. Because according to the National Intimate Partner And Sexual Violence Survey done by the CDC:

More than 1 in 4 men in the United States (28.5%) has experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime. (Compared to 1 in 3 women).

Nearly 1 in 7 men in the United States (13.8% or approximately 15.6 million) has experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in his lifetime. (Compared to 1 in 5 women).

So, yeah. Women are being abused at greater rates, but that does not erase male victims of domestic violence. And it sure as fuck more than "a couple of guys".

I have never seen that stat in Australia. And I've seen a lot of stats.

Must be an American thing...

Re: A theory

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
That seems like a really fucking unlikely theory, frankly

Based on what I can see from googling for a bit, it looks like Australia has very few statistics on male DV victims.

It seems they largely ignore men as victims when collecting data (for both heterosexual and homosexual men).

I'm sure AYRT would argue that if you don't measure it, it doesn't exist.

Lickspittle that they are.

If the guys were pulling a "she abused me" scam when they were the abuser, they wouldn't go to a shelter though. Why would they? It doesn't benefit them in any way. No one is going to go to a DV shelter for a scam when they don't need to unless they were really mentally deranged. For one thing, it makes it harder for guys to keep their position of power (which is why a lot of guys beat on their wives in the first place) -- they're physically separated from their wives and have no excuse to want to see her anymore, and they give up their homes, their possessions, could make it difficult for them to hold down their job for a source of income, etc.

Also, seconding everything kaijinscendre said. If there's no stats for it occurring in Australia it's because they're not collecting data from which to get stats. And gay/bi men with violent male partners exist, just btw. Including gay/bi men with children.
