I'm honestly not sure it's even possible to make Fantastic Four good.

Brad Bird managed it with The Incredibles.

Okay, fair point, but that's not really Fantastic Four, it's a thinly-disguised family version of it.

Not really. It is a general pastiche of superheroes rather than any one property, using the generic superhero powers and the concept of retired superhero being brought out of retirement which was already a hoary old chestnut when it was spoofed musically with the Return of Captain Invincible.

Fantastic Four + Watchmen - rape = Incredibles

Why not?

Let's be honest, the team itself is kind of lame -- it's very much a product of the 60s.

In a way, though, that could be a blessing. Own the team's silly Silver Age origins and make something fun out of it. There's a lot of people out there who miss the Adam West Batman years.

It's an interesting team. It's easy to write badly, but it also has a fairly rich trove of thematic places you can go with it, and some of the best villains in the entirety of comics.

At the end of the day, imo, if someone can't write an interesting FF story, that's on them, not on the team. The material is absolutely there. Just because they've been written in a silly way in the past is no reason to dismiss them, any more than it is for any superhero.
