Yes, how dare they want to take one of the most notoriously shitty localizations full of errors and fix that.

I am legitimately confused as to why FFVII has this reputation. I remember a couple of wonky lines - but all Japanese games had a couple awkwardly translated lines. But besides a couple of lines, which are frankly easy to miss, I don't recall anything about the translation that was problematic. The entire game, minus those few lines, is fine. And most of those lines were fixed in the 1998 PC release anyway.

The same PC released where characters names are changed to reflect the original Japanese and Aerith is Aerith.

...No. She's still Aeris in the PC release. And every re-release of Final Fantasy VII.

IIRC they got a lot wrong and not just a few lines. It's a lot of things that add up to not making sense (Vincent commenting at one point literally says, "Sephiroth knows he was created five years ago? And about the Jenova Project?")

Another thing is something Hojo says about Ifalna and Aerith: The mother is strong, yet has her weaknesses

More correctly, it's roughly translated as, "Her mother wasn't resilient, thus Aerith has her weaknesses." Which makes more sense of the conversation and talking about Aerith and Ifalna. Ifalna was dead by the point in time this dialogue was delivered, so what Hojo says doesn't make sense.

And a bunch of other really bad lines that make zero sense.

Some big ones:

"Cetra travel planet to planet" when they were just nomadic across their own planet and traveled landmass to landmass.

Cloud never said he could "find her there," but basically, "I think I can find it."

CLONES.

Elena in Japanese never says you "did in" Tseng, just "messed up" which implies severe injury over death. His status is more meant to be ambiguous than anything.

There's also this exchange...

Sephiroth: Normal members of SOLDIER are humans that have been showered with Mako. You're different from the others, but still human.

Sephiroth: Standard soldiers like yourself are humans given doses of Makou energy. You are different from the rest of mankind...but you are still human.

The second is far more accurate, and makes sense. Instead of singling out Cloud as different from SOLDIER, he's instead explaining SOLDIER as a whole.

...Do you not remember the first boss where, due to really shite translation, you're told to attack when the tail is up? When it SHOULD say to NOT attack when it's like that?

In all fairness, it does follow with "it's gonna counter with its laser" or something like that, so it makes sense when you read the whole thing. It certainly could have been worded better considering you don't see the whole message at the same time, but it's not that bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. I used to read it as, "Hit it now or it'll counter with its laser!!!"
